Jeep has temporarily ceased shipment of certain Wranglers and Gladiators with manual transmissions due to a previous recall that was not fully remedied. In 2020,

Jeep’s first approach involved requesting a dealer technician to install software that would limit the engine’s torque capability in the event of high clutch assembly temperatures that could pose a safety hazard. Nevertheless, FCA investigators discovered a possible pattern of car fires linked to faulty clutch assemblies in post-2021 recall models.

As a result, the recall population expanded from 33,237 units to 69,201 units. The affected vehicles include the 2018-2023 Jeep Wrangler and 2020-2023 Jeep Gladiator. Jeep is currently working on a remedy, and owners will receive letters starting on April 14.

    Jeep Manual Transmission Recall Overview

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler manual transmission recall for potentially hazardous clutch pressure plate issues impacts a considerable number of vehicles.

Over 69,000 manual transmission-equipped Wrangler SUVs from model years 2018 through 2023 and Gladiator pickups from model years 2020 through 2023 are affected, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall expands on a previous one that didn’t cover as many model years. The Jeep clutch pressure plate defect may result in overheating and cracking, leading to the expulsion of hot debris from the transmission case.

This could potentially cause road hazards for other drivers and may even cause fires in the vehicle or the surrounding area if the debris meets an ignition source.

What causes the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator manual transmission issues?

The clutch pressure plate in some Jeep vehicles has been found to be prone to fracturing due to a design specification issue. This can occur when the clutch is operated in a way that causes excessive heat, such as frequent shifting, towing, or driving on steep hills. Once the pressure plate fractures, hot debris can be released, which poses a significant fire hazard to the vehicle and creates a dangerous road hazard.

How do I know if my Jeep is affected?

Before the clutch pressure plate fails, there are a few telltale signs that drivers may notice.

One of the most common indicators is a burning smell emanating from the engine or transmission, which is caused by excessive heat generated by the slipping clutch.

Drivers may also experience clutch slippage, which occurs when the clutch is not fully engaging and causes the engine to rev higher than normal when shifting gears. This can result in a noticeable loss of power and reduced acceleration. Another warning sign is the appearance of a warning light on the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, such as the check engine light or transmission warning light.

Affected vehicles include Jeep Wrangler SUVs produced between August 23, 2017-February 16, 2023, and Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks produced between December 21, 2018, and February 16, 2023.

If you are affected by this recall and have any questions or concerns, you can contact either the Jeep Recall Center or use this tool available on NHTSA’s website and reference the Jeep recall number 19A or NHTSA campaign number 23V116.

To confirm whether or not your vehicle is included in the transmission recall, you will need to provide your vehicle identification number (VIN).

Is there a fix for the Jeep Manual transmission issues?

There is currently no fix for the Jeep manual transmission issue. Previously, Jeep dealerships performed a software update to address the issue. However, this was only a temporary fix, and the upcoming repair is expected to provide a more long-term solution.

Owners who have already received the software update are advised that they will still need an additional repair once a new fix is available. Jeep says a fix is currently in development.

In addition to the lack of a permanent fix for the Jeep manual transmission issue, it is worth noting that some Jeep owners are bringing forth lawsuits against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) because their vehicles cannot be fixed.

Despite FCA’s attempts to remedy the problem, some Jeep owners are experiencing ongoing issues with their manual transmissions. If you are experiencing similar problems, it may be worth considering seeking legal advice to understand your options.

The models that appear to be most affected by these faulty transmissions and engines have been the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, and Jeep Wrangler. Over the past decade, the Lemon Law Experts have helped thousands of consumers receive refunds and cash compensation for their defective Jeep vehicles.

The faulty Jeep transmissions and engines have caused an array of issues including, but not limited to oil leaks, poor engine performance, difficulty accelerating, poor response time, hard shifts, shaking and shuddering, stalling, overheating, delayed gear engagement, sudden lack or loss of power, and more.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the manufacturer of the Jeep line of vehicles, will attempt to repair the vehicles under the warranty, but in many cases, there just may not be a fix or permanent solution to the problems.

Jeep has introduced several powertrain software and hardware refinements, attempted recalls, multiple software updates and even complete transmission replacements that often times do not fix the problem.
