Common problems: Drivers of the 2019 Ford Ranger have reported a range of vehicle issues, particularly concerning the transmission, electrical system, and engine performance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued several recalls related to the Ranger, addressing various safety concerns that can significantly impact both drivers and passengers.
Notably, the 2019 Ford Ranger has been associated with two major recalls linked to potential vehicle fire issues.
Continue reading to explore more about the safety concerns affecting the 2019 Ford Ranger and how these issues might impact your vehicle.
Common 2019 Ford Ranger Problems
- Transmission: Harsh shifting; Gears not engaging properly or slipping; Delayed engagement when shifting from park to drive or reverse; Overheating; Loss of power; Stalling
- Electrical System: Sensor failures (Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor); Instrument panel issues; Inoperable lights; Error messages; HVAC system problems; Uneven air conditioning; Electrical component failures
- Engine: Coolant leaks; Engine misfires; Turbocharger issues (Missing O-rings); Overheating; Coolant system issues; Carbon buildup in the 2.3L Ecoboost Engine
2019 Ford Ranger Transmission Problems
The 2019 Ford Ranger has been reported to have several transmission problems that owners should be aware of. One of the most commonly cited issues is harsh shifting.
Many owners have noted that the transmission shifts harshly, particularly when the vehicle is cold. This can lead to uncomfortable driving experiences and raise concerns about the overall reliability of the transmission.
Another prevalent issue involves slipping gears. Drivers have complained that the transmission occasionally slips out of gear or fails to engage properly, which can compromise vehicle safety and performance.
Additionally, some Ranger owners have experienced delayed engagement when shifting from park to drive or reverse, causing frustration and potential hazards in busy traffic situations.
Overheating is also a significant concern for the 2019 Ranger. Transmission overheating can lead to further mechanical problems if not addressed promptly.
In severe cases, drivers have reported a loss of power or even stalling while driving, creating dangerous situations on the road.
Two important National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaigns are related to these transmission problems.
The first campaign, initiated on February 1, 2019 (NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V-071), addresses the unintentional shift out of park.
The affected vehicles allow the transmission shift lever to be moved from the “Park” position without the key in the starting system or without depressing the brake pedal, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, which pertains to “Theft Protection.”
A subsequent campaign announced on May 13, 2019 (NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V-366), concerns the shifter position incorrectly indicating ‘Park’.
If the gear shift lever position does not align with the actual transmission gear, the vehicle may move unexpectedly.
Furthermore, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, it may roll away, heightening the risk of a crash or injury.
2019 Ford Ranger Electrical System Problems
The 2019 Ford Ranger has been reported to have several electrical system problems that can affect the vehicle’s performance and driver experience.
One of the most frequently encountered issues is sensor failures. Many owners have noted that various sensors, including the fuel tank pressure sensor, fail repeatedly, leading to inaccurate readings and potential operational issues.
Another common concern involves instrument panel issues. Drivers have reported problems such as lights becoming inoperable and the display of alarming error messages, including “Unsafe Driving” and “Head-on Collision.”
These warnings can be confusing and concerning for drivers, potentially impacting their ability to monitor the vehicle’s status accurately.
Complaints regarding the HVAC system have also surfaced. Some Ranger owners have experienced problems with the blower motor needing replacement, while others have noted issues with the air conditioning, which sometimes blows hot air on one side.
Such HVAC failures can lead to uncomfortable driving conditions, especially in extreme weather.
The 2019 Ford Ranger is subject to several recalls related to its electrical system. One significant recall involves the taillights, where misaligned terminals in an inline connector can result in a loss of function for both left and right rear tail lamps.
This issue, identified under NHTSA Campaign Number 19V-839, can reduce the vehicle’s visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
Moreover, there are two HVAC-related recalls due to fire risks. The first recall, under NHTSA Campaign Number 19V-726, addresses a potential issue with the HVAC blower motor.
Improper clearance between the electrical terminal and the conductive base plate can lead to a resistive short, increasing the risk of the blower motor overheating, melting, or creating smoke.
The second HVAC recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 20V-137, also pertains to the blower motor, where similar issues can result in a fire hazard
2019 Ford Ranger Engine Problems
The 2019 Ford Ranger has been reported to experience several engine problems that can impact its performance and reliability.
One of the most commonly reported issues by drivers is coolant leaks, with many owners noting leaks particularly from the heater core.
These leaks can lead to insufficient coolant levels, potentially causing further engine damage if not addressed promptly.
Another significant concern is engine misfires. Drivers have reported experiencing misfires, which can result in a loss of power and even stalling while driving.
This not only affects the vehicle’s performance but can also pose safety risks, especially in traffic. Turbocharger issues have also been highlighted by some Ranger owners.
Problems such as missing O-rings have been noted, which can impair the turbocharger’s function and negatively affect engine performance.
Overheating is a recurring concern, often linked to coolant system issues. If the engine overheats, it can cause severe damage and costly repairs, making it critical to address any cooling system problems promptly.
If you are experiencing any of these engine-related issues with your 2019 Ford Ranger, it is advisable to seek professional assistance to diagnose and resolve the problems effectively.
Timely intervention can help maintain the vehicle’s performance and prolong its lifespan.

Complaints from Real Ranger Drivers
“The vehicle skips gears when upshifting and does not shift through all the gears when in cruise mode. The truck will buck and bang jolting the passengers and appear to stall out without any warning. This has happened on numerous occasions and has even stalled out in the middle of a very busy intersection almost causing a collision by the truck not having enough power to coast through the intersection. Based on conversations with the dealership, this is not an isolated issue with our vehicle.”
“There is insufficient shielding to prevent water from reaching the top of the engine. This results in water dripping on the coil packs and also entering the spark plug wells, causing loss of spark and reduced engine output. Over time, this issue also leads to rust in the engine head, potentially resulting in engine failure. Additionally, water can reach the EGR DPFE sensor, causing the engine to hesitate and shutter at various speeds. Both of these issues together cause a misfire when applying the accelerator and will cause the vehicle to initially hesitate then surge forward. Even with the engine cover, the venting at the base of the windshield allows water to drip down on the engine head, causing the above issues. Ford does recognize that there is an issue and have written several TSBs on the it.”
“Updated 2022-07-12; The Ranger transmission is actually worse. I didn’t think that was possible. The dealership says that everything is normal operation. I have had loaner vehicles with the exact same issue. How did Ford mass produce such a horrible product. I wish I had done better research prior to buying. The Ranger was a great truck for the first 750 miles. A little loud from 0 to 5 miles per hour, but then a very quiet vehicle with almost no cabin noise. At around 750 miles, the engine started ticking, sometime very subtle, other times loud enough to hear over the radio. I researched on-line and many people experienced the exact same issue – the DI (direct injection pump.) Some people had luck getting it replaced, I have not. The sound with 2,000 miles on the engine is now audible at all times. The radio covers it up about 95% of the time, but that isn’t an option if you want to have a conversation. I would not buy this truck again for this reason. I have now had the dealership look at it twice and they tell me that it is normal and I have to live with it. I will try a different dealer, but frankly, its less than 2 months old, and I’m done with Ford.”
