Common problems with the 2019 Honda HRV include electrical system problems, brake problems, and fuel system problems.
Six recalls have been issued for this vehicle, three of which were for fuel pump problems, two for rearview camera problems, and one for improperly coated rear brake caliper pistons.
With how expensive many modern vehicles are, consumers should take the time to do research and ensure the vehicle they end up purchasing is a good fit for their needs.
Doing that research can be difficult, though, because of how much information is available. It can be difficult to tell which information is legitimate and which is misleading.
In this article, we’ll help detangle some of that confusion and describe the most commonly reported problems with the 2019 Honda HRV.
After that, we will discuss the lemon law and how you can use it to be compensated for buying a lemon.
Common 2019 Honda HRV Problems
- Electrical System Problems: Instrument cluster screen malfunctions, instrument cluster dials malfunction
- Brake Problems: Grinding and squealing noises, various brake sensor alerts, brake hold feature problems
- Fuel System Problems: Acceleration problems, fuel pump issues, stalling, car surges going up hills
2019 Honda HRV Electrical System Problems
In the 2019 Honda HRV, consumers primarily reported experiencing problems with the instrument cluster screen and dials, which would either not display anything or display random numbers and letters.
Consumers described this, making it very difficult to tell how fast their vehicle was moving, how much gas they had left, and other similar information.
This can make it difficult for the driver to properly operate the vehicle, as they may be missing crucial information needed to make decisions while driving.
Electrical system problems are best left to a mechanic, who can inspect things like wiring and fuses to ensure everything is functional.
2019 Honda HRV Fuel System Problems
A vehicle’s fuel system is responsible for moving fuel from the gas tank through a network of hoses and eventually into the engine, where it is used to generate motive power for the car.
When the fuel system is not working properly, it can cause problems because the engine may not get enough gas and stall.
Over time, this can be very damaging for the engine and can even cause it to fail outright. Consumers mentioned problems accelerating, their engines not getting enough fuel, and surging going up hills.
Honda issued a recall for the fuel pumps on the 2019 Honda HRV three times. The first was in May 2020, the second in March 2021, and the third in December 2023.
Their NHTSA Recall IDs are 20V314, 21V215, and 23V858 respectively. The remedy was inspection and replacement.
HRV Owner Complaints
“The gauge cluster display will go in and out. There is apparently a faulty solder joint that gets affected in cold weather and until the car is warmed up the gauge cluster stays blank. I was informed that I need a new one at the cost of $1800+ for a 2019 HRV with 24000 miles. It seems very wrong that this part has failed.”
“Took delivery one week ago, and already regretting it. I didn’t realize during the test drive the CVT trans is horribly noisy and the engine is so weak, we are sometimes fearful pulling out on the highway. Fortunately, our dealer is willing to work with us on an exchange for a CRV. Don’t make the same mistake my wife and I did, taking it for a short test drive. Take out for a good 30 minute drive, including highway time, and you’l see what I mean. Shame on you, Honda!”
“When the throttle is lightly applied from a stop, the vehicle suddenly leapt forward, as if we stomped on the gas pedal. We almost hit our vehicle in the garage. Other times from a stop, giving it throttle to move the HRV would not accelerate.the HR-V would begin to slow down, even if I applied more throttle. It has happened a few times. We took the HRV to the dealer and they could not resolve the problem.”
What You Need to Know About Lemon Law Claims
Lemon laws exist in most states and act as a legal framework allowing consumers to bring claims against manufacturers who sell or lease them defective vehicles, aka lemons.
Generally, they work to ensure that consumers receive either a replacement vehicle or a refund if they end up with a faulty one.
The process typically begins when a consumer identifies recurring issues with their vehicle. These problems must typically impair the vehicle’s use, safety, or value and must be subject to repeat repair attempts.
If the manufacturer or dealer fails to repair the vehicle after these attempts, the consumer should consider starting a lemon law claim.
During the lemon law process, both parties present evidence, such as repair records, to support their argument that the vehicle either is or is not a lemon.
Typically as the prevailing party, the consumer has all of their attorney’s fees and costs paid for by the defendant.
This means that hiring a lemon law attorney, which is already in your best interest, becomes even more of a smart choice to make as there should be no out of pocket expense for the consumer.
Consumers who succeed in their negotiations or lawsuit typically receive either a replacement vehicle, which will be similar to the defective one, or a refund on their payments made towards the defective vehicle.
This refund includes the down payment, monthly payments, tax and interest. In both situations, the manufacturer takes a fee that represents the time the vehicle functioned properly, also known as a usage fee.
Overall, the lemon law process ensures that consumers are not left without recourse if they purchase a defective vehicle, providing a structured path to resolution through repairs, negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.
