Common problems with the 2019 Honda Passport include transmission, engine, and electrical system problems.
The 2019 Honda Passport has been recalled eight times by the NHTSA. These recalls include two for fuel pump defects, two for rearview camera display issues, and several others related to structural problems.
Read on for more information about the safety concerns affecting drivers of the 2019 Honda Passport.
Common 2019 Honda Passport Problems
- Transmission System: Rough and delayed shifting; loud noises during shifting; sudden, harsh accelerations and decelerations; lurching; sudden loss of power
- Engine: Stalling; IdleStop failure
- Electrical System: Dashboard display errors; defective radio system; blank display screen; warning lights; rearview camera display problems; dead battery; auto stop/start issues
2019 Honda Passport Transmission Problems
Some Honda models equipped with the 9-speed automatic transmission have been reported to experience problems such as hesitation during acceleration, unexpected shifting, and rough gear changes.
These issues have raised concerns among drivers about the reliability of this transmission system.
An online forum user reported experiencing a significant transmission failure in their 2019 Honda Passport after only 11,000 miles.
The dashboard showed a “transmission problem” warning, and the vehicle would not shift back into gear.
Additionally, a new class-action lawsuit claims that the ZF 9HP transmission used in various Honda models, including the Passport, may cause rough and delayed shifting, loud noises during gear changes, sudden power loss, and other related issues.
2019 Honda Passport Engine Problems
Some Honda owners have reported instances where their vehicles stall when coming to a stop, followed by a quick restart.
During these occurrences, the “collision mitigation system” warning light may also turn on. With the Idle-Stop feature active, the car can unexpectedly stall.
This is especially concerning due to the lack of a shift interlock in Honda vehicles, as even with the auto stop/start feature disabled, the car might shift into neutral and not restart for several minutes.
Reports of this issue have been noted both with and without the Idle-Stop feature enabled.
The 2019 Honda Passport has also been affected by fuel pump problems. Honda initially issued a recall for this issue in 2021, which was later expanded in 2023.
Some vehicles may have a fuel pump defect that could lead to engine stalling. The official recall numbers from the NHTSA for these issues are 21V-215 and 20V-314.
2019 Honda Passport Electrical System Problems
Owners of the 2019 Honda Passport have reported various electrical system problems, including blank displays, non-functioning backup cameras, screens going blank or black, excessive static in the audio system, and issues with the sound system either crackling or not turning on.
In 2020, Honda recalled the 2019 Passport due to issues with the rearview camera display. Incorrect central network software programming could cause delays or prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. Honda addressed this recall with a software update, identified by NHTSA recall number 20V-440.
On the same day, Honda also issued a recall for instrument panel display errors. The incorrect instrument panel control module software could result in the failure to display crucial information, such as engine oil pressure, speedometer, and gear selector position until the next ignition cycle. This recall is identified by NHTSA campaign number 20V-439.
In 2023, the 2019 Passport was recalled again for similar rearview camera display issues (NHTSA campaign number 23V-431).
Concerns from 2019 Passport Owners
The following are ratings/complaints from 2019 Honda Passport drivers:
“Since I purchased this car in 2020, I have regularly experienced my car stalling out because of the auto idle function. The car shuts off when I brake and then does not turn back on, leaving me stranded in traffic until I can manually shut off my car and turn it back on. This is a major safety hazard that Honda has yet to properly address.”
“The vehicle was unable to restart after the auto idle stop engaged at a stoplight, shutting the engine off. Upon release of the brake, the engine did not restart and the car was left stranded for several hours in the middle of a large intersection putting the driver at risk. The car was unable to be restarted and stranded for over two hours until police were able to clear a safe path and have the car towed to the nearest service center. There were no warning indicators or service lights prior to this occurrence. The authorized Honda service center found that the battery was drained and the auto idle stop had engaged while the car battery was low, leaving the car stranded and unable to be restarted.”
“Potential customers be aware of infotainment issues!!! DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! After less than 500 miles a crackling noise freezing the infotainment started when hitting a bump, along with a nauseating chemical smell. Took the car for repair and was told that they tightened some lose parts and the car should be fine. It all got worse after…”
Lemon Law Insights for Passport Owners
When a car that a customer buys or leases consistently falls short of quality and performance requirements while it is still under warranty, the Lemon Law provides legal recourse.
As per California law, a car cannot be deemed a lemon unless it has been through a reasonable amount of repair attempts.
A refund, an replacement vehicle or cash compensation could be available as remedies, depending on the particular lemon law that applies in your location.
With the refund or replacement options, the manufacturer subtracts a usage fee for the period of time the car was used trouble-free. Replacement car recipients could be responsible for any price difference.
