Common problems: The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica has been noted for several reliability and performance problems. Owners frequently report issues with the transmission, electrical system, and steering, which can impact the vehicle’s overall functionality.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has responded to these concerns with two separate recalls addressing electrical system defects involving the wiring harness and rearview camera.
Keep reading to learn more about these problems and their implications for drivers.
Common 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Problems
- Transmission: Fluid leaks, burning smell, hard shifting, jerking
- Electrical System: Blank infotainment screen, engine shutoff, rearview camera issues
- Steering: Loss of power steering assist
2020 Chrysler Pacifica Transmission Problems
The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica appears to be prone to transmission problems. One of the most common signs of trouble is transmission fluid leakage.
This issue might indicate the need for a fluid change or flush. Leaks can arise from various sources, such as faulty transmission hoses, cracked fluid lines, leaking seals, damaged gaskets, broken drain plugs, or a malfunctioning torque converter pump.
Another warning sign is an unusual burning smell, which could suggest that the transmission fluid is overheating or burning within the transmission components.
If you hear strange noises or grinding sounds when shifting gears, or if the gears seem to catch, this may indicate a need for additional lubrication or signal a more serious issue.
Some owners have reported experiencing hard shifting, especially when accelerating or decelerating, affecting the powertrain’s performance.
Chrysler has acknowledged this problem and issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to address it.
2020 Chrysler Pacifica Electrical System Problems
The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica is vulnerable to electrical system issues, which have resulted in two different recalls. Owners have reported problems such as a freezing infotainment screen and a failed fuel pump.
Additionally, there have been complaints about the auto start-stop feature ceasing to function after only six months, with some dealerships suggesting increased driving to properly charge the battery.
In 2023, Chrysler recalled the Pacifica Hybrid due to an issue where an electrical short in the wiring harness could cause the engine to shut down unexpectedly.
This recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 23V010, affects approximately 67,117 vehicles. To address the problem, dealerships updated the Power Inverter Module (PIM) software and, if needed, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) software.
Chrysler also issued a recall for certain 2020 Chrysler Pacifica due to a software error that can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse.
This issue, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 20V191, may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash. The recall involves updating the radio display software.
2020 Chrysler Pacifica Steering Problems
Drivers regularly report steering issues in the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica. One concern includes shuddering, which some drivers have reported experiencing when making sharp turns at low speeds.
This shuddering sensation can be unsettling and may indicate an underlying issue with the steering system.
There have also been reports of the vehicle jerking forward when releasing the brake pedal from a complete stop.
This jerking motion can be disconcerting and suggests that there may be a problem with the steering or braking system.
What Pacifica Owners Say
“Well yesterday, my van stopped emergently in the middle of an intersection. The brake engaged, couldn’t use any pedals, steering or switch gears. I had to shut my vehicle off and restart. In the middle of a busy intersection at 4pm. The auto start/stop light keeps coming on. Take it to the dealership today and they said it’s a sensor issue with my hood switch. My hood thinks it’s open so my van freaks out and stops driving. It’s a $540 fix. This is a huge safety concern. From what I read, this van has had numerous start/stop issues and sensor problems. It’s a 2020 with 62k miles. I’m glad I wasn’t on the interstate or somewhere more dangerous.”
“Our car was fixed for a recall 5 months ago for engine failure on the highway because of an electrical issue. On Saturday morning driving on the highway, the car’s dashboard gave a warning when we driving on the highway, 70 mph, and then immediately started breaking. This caused us to be slowing in the middle lane to 45 mph and cars swerving around us. We were very lucky to be able to maneuver around traffic and safely make it to the shoulder to catch our breath. This could of been a really bad accident involving 3-8 cars. We had the car towed to a dealership and after a diagnosis, the car needed a whole new transmission.”
“I have a Chrysler Pacifica Limited. It’s had one issue after another. Electrical issues, infotainment screen freezing, fuel pump failed, issues with sliding doors, and the latest is the compressor on the A/C is bad. It’s unbelievable how many times I’ve had to take it to the dealership for repairs. I love this van as far as the interior features and comfort but it has not been reliable and I’ve spent hours taking it on for repairs.”
How the Lemon Law Can Resolve Your Pacifica Issues
If you own or lease a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica and have encountered persistent issues despite multiple repair attempts, you may be eligible for relief under your state’s lemon law.
Lemon laws are intended to protect consumers who purchase or lease vehicles with unresolved defects after a reasonable number of repair attempts.
To start a lemon law claim, first ensure you have documented the issues and have made several attempts to resolve them at an authorized dealership.
Typically, you need to demonstrate that the Pacifica has been subjected to multiple repair attempts—usually between two and four—without successfully fixing the problem. If your vehicle meets these conditions, it may qualify as a “lemon.”
A successful lemon law claim often results in either a refund or a replacement vehicle. If you opt for a refund, you may receive reimbursement for the full purchase price, including the down payment, monthly payments, taxes, and interest.
Additionally, you could be compensated for incidental costs such as registration renewal fees and expenses related to renting or towing the vehicle.
Alternatively, if a replacement vehicle is provided, it will be a new Pacifica or a similar model, though you might be responsible for any price difference.
Both refund and replacement options may include a deduction for mileage or use before the defect was identified.
Since manufacturers often have experienced legal teams to challenge these claims, having a knowledgeable lemon law attorney can be essential.

They will represent your interests, handle negotiations or court proceedings, and help secure the best possible outcome for your case.
