Common 2020 Ford F-150 Problems

2020 Ford F-150 Transmission Problems

Owners have reported harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and other drivability concerns.

Harsh or Delayed Shifting

  • Severity: Moderate; harsh or delayed shifts can make the truck unpleasant to drive and may point to deeper internal transmission issues.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Ford issued recall 20V-197 for a shift cable clip that may detach and cause the transmission to be in a different gear than selected. They also released TSB 10252674 for harsh or delayed shifting behavior.2
  • Fix: Dealers may replace the shift cable locking clip for the recall and perform PCM/TCM software updates, adaptive relearn procedures, fluid inspection, or transmission repairs if needed.

2020 Ford F-150 Engine Issues

Owners have reported excessive oil consumption, engine noise, and related drivability issues.

Excessive Oil Consumption

  • Severity: Moderate; excessive oil consumption can lead to repeated low-oil conditions, added maintenance costs, and possible engine damage if ignored.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Ford issued TSB 10184643 to address oil consumption concerns.
  • Fix: Dealers may reprogram the powertrain control module and, depending on diagnosis, replace valve cover or PCV-related components.

2020 Ford F-150 Electrical System Problems

Owners have reported battery-cable related electrical faults, intermittent system failures, and camera or screen issues.

Power Supply Cable Incorrectly Attached to Starter

  • Severity: Severe; Ford stated a loose battery cable connection could cause intermittent or inoperative systems affecting displays, steering assist, braking assist, engine operation, and may create smoke or fire risk.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Ford issued NHTSA Recall #20V-467 for the starter motor battery positive power supply attachment nut.
  • Fix: Ford’s fix is a replacement starter motor battery positive power supply attachment nut.

Rearview Camera Glitches

  • Severity: Moderate; a blank, distorted, or delayed rearview camera image reduces visibility while reversing. Frozen screens may also limit access to vehicle features.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Ford issued TSB 10183405 for blank, distorted, or intermittent rearview camera images.
  • Fix: Dealers will replace the affected camera if necessary, after inspection.

Issues Experienced by F-150 Drivers

NHTSA Complaint

“The rear view camera turned black, sometimes purple, the image is distorted. I googled it and it says 700,000 F150’s were recalled for this problem but when I called the Ford where I live they said it didn’t have a recall.”

NHTSA Complaint

“Experience HARSH Engagement with transmission both upshift and downshift. Some downshifts at so HARSH, feels like rear wheels are trying to “lock up”. Ford dealer performed recall which did not correct the issues. Ford dealer recommended full transmission replacement. Seems this is a known issue and Ford has admitted fault by issuing a recall in an effort to “fix” the problems with the 10 speed transmission.”

Kelley Blue Book Complaint

“Oil pans are cheap and crack easily at oil changes. Ford is aware of this, and the dealers push the cracked pans onto the client’s and they won’t recall them. They won’t use aftermarket pans to solve the problem? But continue to say they can’t get their hands on any pans /unavailable at this time. Meanwhile, oil drips all over your driveway. This is completely unacceptable! Stand behind your product Ford !”

Legal Options for Defective Vehicle Owners

Lemon laws protect consumers when a manufacturer cannot repair a substantial vehicle defect within a reasonable number of attempts during the warranty period.

If a defect significantly affects the vehicle’s use, value, or safety, the owner may be entitled to a refund, replacement vehicle, or financial compensation. Persistent repair visits and lengthy time out of service are often important warning signs.

A vehicle does not need to be completely inoperable to qualify. Repeated warning lights, recurring drivability complaints, software malfunctions, or long repair delays may all support a potential claim. If your vehicle continues to return to the dealership for the same unresolved issue, it may be worth having the situation reviewed.
