Common problems: The 2020 Kia Soul has faced a range of reported problems, including issues with its engine, transmission, and braking systems.
Notably, some 2020 Soul models with 2.0L Nu MPI engines have been recalled due to engine piston issues. The recall addresses improperly heat-treated piston oil rings, which can lead to significant engine damage.
Continue reading to learn more about the most common safety issues affecting 2020 Kia Soul drivers. If you are experiencing any of these issues, you should consult with a professional mechanic as soon as possible.
Common 2020 Kia Soul Problems
- Engine: Stalling, engine failure, excessive oil consumption, check engine light, unintended acceleration
- Transmission: Grinding, whining, clunking, or humming sounds, difficulty shifting gears, transmission warning light, transmission fluid leaks
- Braking System: Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light, brake shaking, brake pulsating, premature brake pad wear, strange noises, start/stop issues
2020 Kia Soul Engine Problems
The 2020 Kia Soul has been associated with several engine issues; many drivers have reported that their engines stall unexpectedly.
In more severe cases, some drivers have experienced complete engine failure, often requiring costly repairs or even a full engine replacement.
Excessive oil consumption is another common complaint, with many owners noting that their vehicles consume unusually high amounts of oil.
If this issue isn’t addressed in time, it can lead to significant engine damage. 2020 Kial Soul drivers have also reported instances of unexplained acceleration where the vehicle suddenly speeds up without warning, which can be extremely dangerous while driving.
Kia previously issued a recall for certain 2020 Kia Soul vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The recall is due to improperly heat-treated piston oil rings, which can result in engine damage.
This defect significantly increases the risk of engine stalling and, in some cases, may cause oil to leak onto hot exhaust components, potentially leading to a fire.
The recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 21V-259, was issued on April 13, 2021, and affects approximately 147,249 vehicles, including certain 2020 Kia Soul vehicles.
2020 Kia Soul Transmission Problems
Some signs that your 2020 Kia Soul may be experiencing transmission issues include odd noises like grinding, whining, clunking, or humming when shifting gears or even when the car is in neutral.
Difficulty shifting is another red flag, as the car may hesitate or struggle to change gears properly. The transmission warning light may also come on with or without other transmission or drivetrain symptoms.
Other serious problems have been reported with the 2020 Kia Soul’s transmission, including complete transmission failure.
This often requires significant repairs or a full replacement of the transmission. Jerking and hesitation during acceleration have also been frequently reported by owners, and many have mentioned hearing loud, clunking noises when shifting gears.
In some cases, drivers have experienced transmission slippage, where the transmission fails to stay in gear while driving, greatly increasing the risk of an accident.
If you’re dealing with any of these transmission issues, we highly recommend seeking professional help.
Consulting a mechanic or visiting your local Kia dealership for a thorough inspection and potential repairs can help address these problems before they get worse.
2020 Kia Soul Braking Problems
One of the most common braking system problems in the 2020 Kia Soul is the illumination of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light, which can be the result of low brake fluid levels, a malfunctioning speed sensor, or in more severe cases, total brake failure.
Brake pad wear is another common problem, with Kia Soul brake pads typically lasting between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on driving conditions.
Frequent use of the brakes, such as in heavy traffic, may require more frequent inspections. Other warning signs of brake issues include squealing or squeaking noises, grinding sounds, leaking fluid, spongy or soft brakes, the car pulling to one side when braking, and burning smells.
Kia Soul drivers have also reported issues with the brake pedal, noting that it can become rigid, making it difficult to stop the vehicle effectively.
In more alarming cases, there have been instances where the brakes failed to stop the car during episodes of unexplained acceleration.
2020 Kia Soul Concerns
“I purchased this car (Used) on 8/1/2023 and on 8/7/23 I called Kia and stated that the car started shaking while driving and I took the car to the dealership on 8/10 and they stated they could not find any problem, they would have if they had taken it out for a drive. After waiting all day from 9:30 until 4pm they found nothing. I saw my car just sitting there and no one doing any work or anything on my car. My car still shakes so bad while driving that even the steering wheel is shaking and now when I stop at a red light the car takes a few minutes before it will move. I have had this car for a month and 2 weeks and they will not return my calls to setup an appointment. Kia Corporate can’t even get them to respond.”
“My husband was driving down the street in our 2020 Kia soul when under the hood of the car started to smoke profusely and a fire broke out under the hood of the car the engine was affected the car no longer turns on or turns over there was a recall for the engine overheating however we took it into a Kia location and June and they said nothing was wrong we took it in in May for recalls they said nothing was wrong they deleted all of the codes in the vehicle and one month later this happened in the car is no longer operable. Kia refused to help us at JT’s Kia claiming that the car experienced wear and tear however the car was only 3 years old and there was no wear and tear.”
“I bought my 2020 soul lx in June of 2020. It started knocking at 6k miles. It now has 13k on it and kia is stating this is normal. It is the most embarrassing car I’ve ever bought. The stares I get in parking lots from people looking at a new car with a bottom end knock is terrible. Save your self the hassle and buy anything else but one of these. And to add to it the car has alot of blow by and burns 2.5 quarts or oil every 5k miles. Kia said its okay to burn up to 3 quarts in-between changes. The car only hold 4.25 quarts!! If they would stand behind what they sell they could have a great product. I will never recommend a kia to anyone or buy another.”
Legal Safeguards for Your Troubled Vehicle
If you’re facing repeat issues with your 2020 Kia Soul, there may be legal protections available to you under the lemon law.
This law is designed to safeguard consumers who purchase or lease vehicles that fail to meet quality and performance expectations while still under warranty.
If your Kia Soul has undergone repeat warranty repairs for the same or similar issue and that problem impacts the vehicle’s safety, usability, or value, you may be eligible for compensation under the lemon law.
Lemon law procedures and remedies vary by state but generally offer options such as a refund, a replacement vehicle, or cash compensation.
If you choose a refund, be aware that the manufacturer may deduct a fee for the time you were able to first use the vehicle without issues causing it to be a lemon.
If you opt for a replacement vehicle, you might need to pay the difference if the new vehicle costs more than your original purchase in addition to a potential usage fee.
In successful lemon law cases, the vehicle manufacturer is typically required to cover your legal fees and costs, meaning you generally can pursue a claim without worrying about out-of-pocket costs for legal representation.
