Continue reading to learn more about the most common safety issues affecting 2020 Kia Sportage drivers.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, please consult with a professional mechanic at an authorized dealership or repair shop as soon as possible.
Common 2020 Kia Sportage Problems
- Engine: Engine bearing failure, excessive oil consumption, knocking sound, check engine light, overheating
- Transmission: Fluid leaks, strange smells, transmission warning light, shifting delays, shaking
- Electrical System: Issues with in-car electronics, battery drain, security alarm errors, dimmed lights
- Service Brakes: ABS warning light, low brake fluid, premature wear of brake pads, defective brake line
2020 Kia Sportage Engine Problems
The 2020 Kia Sportage has been linked to several engine-related issues that drivers should be aware of.
One common problem is the activation of the check engine light, which can be triggered by various issues such as a dirty mass airflow sensor, a faulty fuel injection system, a damaged oxygen sensor, or even a loose, damaged, or missing gas cap.
This warning light is an important indicator that something may be wrong with the vehicle and typically requires a diagnostic check to determine the cause.
Another significant concern reported by owners is excessive engine oil consumption. Some drivers have found that their Sportage consumes oil at an unusually high rate, necessitating frequent oil top-ups and potentially leading to increased engine wear over time.
A more serious issue involves the risk of engine compartment fires. Kia issued a recall for certain Sportage vehicles due to a defect in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).
This defect can cause a short circuit, which may lead to a fire in the engine compartment. The recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 21V-137, affects approximately 379,931 vehicles.
To address this issue, Kia advised owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repairs are completed.
If you experience any of these issues, you should have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible.
2020 Kia Sportage Transmission Problems
One common transmission problem in the 2020 Kia Sportage is fluid leaks. Leaking transmission fluid is a sign that the fluid may need to be changed or flushed.
If you notice fluid under your vehicle, be sure to address this issue as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Another issue involves strange smells. A burning odor coming from under the hood could indicate that the transmission fluid is overheating or burning, which can be a sign of more severe problems within the transmission system.
Noises such as grinding, whining when shifting gears, or persistent buzzing sounds can also signal transmission problems. These noises often result from internal issues such as worn-out gears or damaged components.
Shifting delays when changing gears are another common problem in the 2020 Kia Sportage. This issue can be caused by worn or damaged gears, faulty solenoids, or problems with the transmission control module.
Similarly, difficulties with shifting into certain gears might be due to misaligned throttle position sensors or malfunctioning shift solenoids.
Ignoring these transmission problems can lead to more severe damage and costly repairs. If you are experiencing any of these transmission problems, make sure to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.
2020 Kia Sportage Electrical System Problems
Like other Kia vehicles, the 2020 Sportage appears to be prone to electrical system problems. Battery drain is one such issue, where some owners have found their batteries draining quickly, potentially linked to problems with the alarm system.
Alarm malfunctions are another concern, with systems sometimes going off unexpectedly or failing to activate. Ignition issues, including problems with the anti-theft immobilizer, have also been reported.
In more severe cases, there have been instances of electrical fires, often related to faulty wiring or components.
A relevant recall for Kia vehicles, including the 2020 Sportage, is the September 2022 recall under NHTSA Campaign Number 22V-703.
This recall addresses a potential fire hazard involving the tow hitch harness. The issue arises from debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB), which may cause an electrical short and lead to a fire.
2020 Kia Sportage Braking System Problems
The 2020 Kia Sportage may be prone to several braking system issues. One problem regularly reported by drivers is the illumination of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light on the dashboard.
If this red or yellow light stays on while driving, it could indicate a problem with the brakes, such as a faulty speed sensor, low brake fluid, or even complete brake failure.
Another issue involves the brake fluid level. When the brake fluid level is low, the parking brake warning light may illuminate.
It is crucial to check and top off the brake fluid reservoir as needed because driving with insufficient brake fluid is not recommended and can compromise braking performance.
Concerns from Kia Sportage Drivers
“Check engine light intermittently turned on for years. Took to dealership numerous times with no resolution. Was driving and vehicle overheated to the point I thought I was going to catch fire. Pulled over, had towed to dealership. They replaced 51 + parts and spent $15,900 on repairs just to give me back a vehicle that is a lemon. Car engine Revs louder than before.”
“I WAS DRIVING AND I BEGAN SMELLING A BURNING SMELL WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. THE SMELL HAS GOTTEN STRONGER AND NOT GONE AWAY. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP AFTER FINDING OUT THERE WAS RECALLS ON VEHICLE THAT WERE MY MAKE AND MODEL AND THE RECALL DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOT HELPFUL. THEY SAID THEY HAD NOT GOTTEN A RECALL ON MY SPECIFIC CAR YET AND THOUGH THEY COULD DETECT AN ‘ODOR’ THEY WEREN’T CERTAIN WHAT IT WAS FROM AND LITERALLY TOLD ME TO NOT PARK INDOORS. AND IF MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE TO EXIT QUICKLY. I ALSO CALLED KIA AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING AND THAT I COULD TRY ANOTHER PLACE FOR A SECOND OPINION. I TOLD THEM THERE WAS A RECALL AND MY FUSES NEEDED TO BE CHECKED. NO ONE WANTED TO HELP ME.”
“I just bought a new 2020 Kia Sportage LX 2.4 AWD, 6-automatic. Car is ok but so disappointed with fuel-economy. the rest of the car and features don’t matter as the focus is always on the poor fuel economy. (hope I can get from point “A” to “B” without needing to stop for gas. ) Terrible gas mileage. No new car should be this hard on gas. The worst by far of any Car in this class. I cant believe this is a 4 cylinder engine.”
Your Kia Sportage Lemon Law Rights
If you’re dealing with persistent issues with your 2020 Kia Sportage, you might have legal protections available to you under the lemon law.
The Lemon Law aims to safeguard consumers who purchase or lease vehicles that do not comply with quality and performance criteria while still covered by the warranty.
If your 2020 Kia Sportage has required repeat repairs for the same or similar problem, and this issue affects the vehicle’s safety, usability, or value, you may be eligible for a refund, replacement vehicle or cash compensation under the lemon law.
Lemon law remedies can vary depending on your state but generally include options such as a refund, a replacement vehicle, or cash compensation.
If you choose to pursue a refund, keep in mind that the manufacturer might deduct a fee for the time you were able to use the vehicle without issues that caused it to be a lemon.
In many successful lemon law cases, the vehicle manufacturer is required to pay for the consumer’s legal fees and costs, which makes pursuing a lemon law claim an easy financial decision since the consumer typically will not incur out-of-pocket costs for legal representation.
