2020 Kia Telluride Problems

Common problems: Some of the most common problems with 2020 Kia Telluride include engine, electrical system, transmission, and visibility/wiper issues.

These defects have prompted six recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address various safety concerns.

One of the most serious recalls involves a malfunction in the power seat motor caused by a stuck seat slide knob, which can overheat and increase the risk of a fire.

This recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-407, affects over 462,000 vehicles and poses a substantial hazard to both drivers and passengers.

Other issues include fire hazards linked to a faulty tow hitch harness. Continue reading to explore the most common problems and recalls impacting 2020 Kia Telluride drivers.

2020 Kia Telluride Engine/Fuel System Problems

The 2020 Kia Telluride has faced numerous complaints regarding its engine and fuel system. High oil consumption is a frequent concern among owners, with reports indicating that the vehicle consumes oil at an unexpectedly high rate. If left unchecked, this can result in extensive engine damage.

Another common issue is a high-pitched squealing noise during cold starts, which many attribute to engine problems.

Some drivers have also experienced engine stalling and sudden power loss, posing a significant safety risk, especially at higher speeds.

The fuel system has also been problematic, with complaints about malfunctioning fuel pumps and fuel injectors.

For those encountering these issues, professional mechanical inspection and regular maintenance, such as monitoring oil levels, are essential for minimizing risks.

2020 Kia Telluride Electrical System Problems

Electrical system issues are another area of concern for 2020 Kia Telluride owners. A common complaint is the “Check ESC” warning message, often paired with the vehicle failing to start or displaying other warning lights.

Battery and starting system malfunctions have also been reported, with some owners needing to replace the battery multiple times.

Problems with high beam headlights have led to costly repairs, while complete electrical system failures have resulted in engines shutting down unexpectedly, whether idling or driving. Sunroof malfunctions, including alignment issues preventing proper closure, are yet another source of frustration for owners.

Those experiencing these issues are advised to seek a thorough inspection and necessary repairs from a Kia dealership or a trusted mechanic.

Kia America, Inc. has previously issued a recall for certain 2020 Kia Telluride vehicles due to potential failure of high beam headlights, which could reduce visibility and increase crash risk.

Affected vehicles will undergo inspection and repair or replacement of the high beam headlights as part of NHTSA Campaign 24V-148.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) previously investigated a complete loss of high beams in the 2020 Kia Telluride.

The issue stems from the halogen bulb’s heat damaging the gear mechanism that operates the shutter, preventing proper high beam function.

Kia responded with recall 24V-148, which includes inspection and repair to mitigate this safety risk.

Kia has also issued NHTSA recall 20V-436 for inoperative trailer brake lights in the 2020 Kia Telluride. This recall addresses a defect where the trailer brake lights do not illuminate when the Smart Cruise Control system independently applies the brakes, increasing the risk of a crash.

As part of the recall remedy, Kia will install an additional wire harness to the main fuse box.

2020 Kia Telluride Transmission Problems

The transmission system in the 2020 Kia Telluride has also drawn formal complaints from drivers. Many owners have reported sensations of the transmission slipping, particularly when using cruise control or driving at moderate speeds.

Delayed shifting, where the vehicle hesitates before changing gears, has been another frequent issue. Rough or jerky shifting has been reported, especially when the vehicle is not fully warmed up.

Additionally, excessive transmission noise and vibrations, often around 15,000 miles, have been noted. In more severe cases, owners have experienced complete transmission failure, requiring costly repairs or replacements. Regular maintenance and early diagnosis can help prevent serious issues.

A related recall was issued under NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-214, where Kia identified a risk of vehicle rollaway caused by the intermediate and right front driveshafts not fully engaging.

Kia advised owners to engage the emergency parking brake until the issue was resolved. Dealers were instructed to update the electronic parking brake software and replace damaged parts as necessary.

2020 Kia Telluride Visibility/Wiper Problems

Visibility and wiper issues have been a significant problem for many 2020 Kia Telluride owners. Fragile windshields that crack easily from minor impacts or spontaneously have been frequently reported.

Sunroof malfunctions, such as misalignment and water leaks, are another area of frustration.

High beam headlight failures have compounded visibility concerns, while side mirrors that fail to fully retract or extend have also been noted.

Additionally, poor wiper performance, including failure to effectively clear the windshield, can also result in significant safety concerns.

Owners encountering these problems should consult a Kia dealership or qualified mechanic to address the issues.

2020 Kia Telluride Owner Complaints

  1. NHTSA Complaint

“My 2020 Kia Telluride SX model won’t start, I get an error “Check ESC“. It will also have other warning ligts come on also. The failure from the start seemed like the bad battery and a (TOC TOC) sound was heard when trying to turn it on several times Had the checked the battery and replaced because it was bad, after a month days it began to have the problem again Jumpstarting the car worked but only temporarily. The next day, or within a few hours the same issue of not turning over.”

“One morning when I went to get into my car I noticed a large crack approximately 12in in length across my windshield. There had been no noticeable chips in the windshield prior and there was no sign of being hit of any kind. I took the car to be looked at by a family member in glass and he said the issue is a manufacturing issue and the glass is thin and unsafe. The dealer said they won’t replace because it isn’t in the date range involved in the class action lawsuit. Since this I have had several more chips and the crack now runs all the way across the glass and extends up and down.”

“I currently own a 2020 Telluride I found out the oii was not lasting to next oil change, service told me today it uses a quart of oil every 1000 miles this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. How much are the big oil companies paying KIA and Hyundai to make oil eating engines these engines need to be recalled and replaced.”

Understanding Lemon Law Criteria

If your 2020 Kia Telluride consistently experiences recurring issues that affect its performance, safety, or value, you may be eligible for protection under your state’s lemon law.

Generally, a vehicle may be classified as a “lemon” if it has required multiple warranty repair attempts for the same problem without resolution.

These laws are designed to protect consumers, but the specific criteria can vary from state to state. It’s important to understand the regulations that apply in your area to determine whether your vehicle qualifies.

Should your 2020 Kia Telluride meet lemon law criteria, you may be entitled to remedies such as a replacement vehicle, a refund, or monetary compensation.

If you opt for a refund or replacement, the manufacturer may deduct a usage fee for the time the vehicle was operational without significant defects.

In the case of a replacement, you might need to cover the price difference between your Telluride and the new vehicle.

Consulting a lemon law attorney can help you navigate the process, ensuring your rights are protected and providing clarity on the most suitable options for your case.
