2021 honda hrv problems

Common problems: Airbag problems, forward collision avoidance system issues, electrical system problems, and engine problems. Three recalls have been issued for this vehicle, two for a faulty rearview camera display and one for airbags which may unintentionally deploy.

Consumers expect newer cars to have fewer issues than older ones, but this is often not the case. With how many different systems there are in modern vehicles, there are so many more points of failure and ways in which a vehicle can cause issues for the driver.

Fortunately, consumers typically report these issues to bodies like the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) so that other consumers can be informed and aware.

In this article, we will be summarizing the most commonly reported problems with the 2021 Honda HRV as well as go over how you can use the lemon law to be compensated for purchasing a defective vehicle.

Common 2021 Honda HRV Problems

  • Airbag Problems: Unintentional deployment
  • Forward Collision Avoidance System Issues: Phantom automatic braking, faulty sensors
  • Electrical System Problems: Car doors locking and getting stuck, infotainment system issues, rearview camera blank, false readings
  • Engine Problems: Failure to accelerate, loss of engine power

2021 Honda HRV Airbag Problems and Recall

Though few consumers actually reported experiencing problems with their airbags, Honda issued a recall for them in February 2024. There were likely not many reports because airbag issues tend to not show themselves unless the airbags are needed, and accidents in which the airbags deploy are thankfully less common than those where they do not. Honda stated that the airbags could deploy accidentally or prematurely, and therefore needed to be repaired.

The NHTSA Recall ID for this recall is 24V064, and the remedy is replacement of the seat weight sensors.

2021 Honda HRV Forward Collision Avoidance Problems

The forward collision avoidance system is a system that, when functioning properly, warns the driver of obstacles in front of the vehicle and applies the brakes to prevent an accident if need be. Unfortunately, the sensors used in these systems can falsely report and cause the car to engage the brakes as if there was something in front of the car when there actually is not.

For the driver, this sudden intervention can be scary and make them think they have lost control of the vehicle. Consumers who experience this should avoid using the forward collision avoidance system or take the vehicle to a mechanic to be inspected and repaired if possible.

2021 Honda HRV Electrical System Problems

Electrical problems in vehicles are usually widespread and varied because vehicles have so many electrical systems inside of them. In the case of the 2021 Honda HRV this is also true.

Consumers reported issues ranging from car doors getting stuck to false readings on their dashboard. The rearview camera being blank was a very commonly reported problem, and Honda issued a recall for these cameras twice.

The first recall was issued in February 2023 and the second in May 2024. Both recalls provide a software update as the remedy, and the NHTSA Recall IDs are 23V046 and 24V384 respectively.

Complaints from 2021 Honda HRV Owners

    2021 honda hrv complaints

“When you’re driving down the highway your break automatically come on. The brake light comes on it goes beep beep and the brakes slams on really hard and you can hear you the brakes grinding. And there’s nothing in front of you no cars or anything and it’s done that three times on me just today. It’s been doing that off and on for about 2 months now.”

“Problems with differential had to be addressed 7,000 in repairs now presently parking brake emission light is on continuously . What next? Need a recall on parking brake sensor system. I’m still under warranty.”

“My car is not even 8 years old with 100,000 miles. Out of nowhere, with no warning sign, the transmission died on me. Now they want $8,000 to repair it (on a car that is now worth not even $9,000). My car is barely outside of the warranty zone to get the new transmission for free. It’s like the moment I went over the warranty in mileage it broke. Honda would not help me or show any sympathy. I thought Hondas were supposed to drive a lot longer than 8 years. This was extremely disappointing and now I have to purchase a new car. I will not be purchasing from Honda again.”

Empower Yourself with Lemon Law Knowledge

The lemon law in California allows consumers to obtain compensation for defective vehicles that have been repeatedly repaired during the manufacturer’s original warranty.

This compensation is either a refund or a replacement vehicle of similar make and model. The lemon law process starts with a consumer finding a defect in their vehicle and taking it to an authorized manufacturer dealer for repairs.

Meticulous documentation of these repair attempts is crucial, as it forms the foundation for a lemon law claim in California. It’s likely a lemon if the problem persists after a reasonable amount of repair attempts, which ranges from two to four based on how bad the problem is.

Engaging a lemon law attorney at this stage is highly advisable. An attorney can assist in organizing the case, gathering necessary documentation and records, negotiating with the manufacturer, and representing the consumer in court if necessary.

The involvement of an experienced attorney significantly enhances the likelihood of a successful claim. Manufacturers typically employ legal teams to handle such cases, so it makes sense for consumers to do the same.

In addition to receiving a replacement vehicle or a refund, successful lemon law consumers in California are also entitled to the auto manufacturer paying for their attorney’s fees and costs. This ensures that pursuing a lawsuit does not incur any personal expense for the consumer, as the attorney’s fees and costs will be paid for by the auto manufacturer.
