Common problems: The 2021 Kia Seltos has been reported to have several issues, with drivers frequently noting problems with the vehicle’s engine, transmission, and electrical systems.
This model has faced a recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) due to the risk of a vehicle fire. In addition to these concerns, some owners have experienced theft issues.
Drivers say that Kia’s response to these theft problems has impacted the car’s value, insurance availability, and insurance costs.
Continue reading to explore the safety concerns and other issues associated with the 2021 Kia Seltos.
Common 2021 Kia Seltos Problems
- Engine: Stalling, engine shutoff, check engine light, excessive oil consumption
- Transmission: Hesitation, difficulty changing gears, high RPM, surging
- Electrical System: Loss of power, warning lights
- Theft: Vulnerable to vehicle theft
2021 Kia Seltos Engine Problems
Some 2021 Kia Seltos owners have experienced significant engine problems, including the need for engine rebuilds or replacements, issues with the cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt, and sludge accumulation.
In June 2021, Kia Motors America further expanded the recall for specific 2021 Kia Seltos vehicles with 2.0L Nu MPI engines.
This action was prompted by concerns that improperly heat-treated piston oil rings might result in engine damage.
Owners were instructed to take their vehicles to a local Kia dealership for inspection. If the inspection revealed issues, Kia would replace the engine at no cost to the owner.
Additionally, Kia updated the vehicle’s software to provide alerts for potential piston oil ring problems. The NHTSA has assigned campaign number 21V259 to this recall.
2021 Kia Seltos Transmission Problems
2021 Kia Seltos drivers regularly report transmission problems. These issues have included difficulties with shifting, with some drivers noting that the vehicle fails to engage any gear, while others have experienced uncontrollable engine revving.
Complaints also include transmission hesitation when starting from a stop, sluggish shifting in manual mode, and noticeable shaking at various speeds.
Additional concerns involve grinding noises during acceleration and, in some cases, sudden transmission failure.
Some drivers have also reported overheating issues with the transmission, which can exacerbate other problems.
2021 Kia Seltos Electrical System Problems
The 2021 Kia Seltos may be prone to various electrical system problems. One significant issue reported by owners is a loss of power while driving, which is often accompanied by warning lights illuminating on the dashboard.
This can be a major concern as it may affect the vehicle’s performance and safety.
Another common problem involves the temperature sensor. Malfunctions in this component can cause the air conditioning system to blow hot air unexpectedly.
There have also been instances where both the engine and electrical systems fail simultaneously while driving. This can lead to the vehicle shutting off and locking up until it restarts on its own.
2021 Kia Seltos Theft Problems
The 2021 Kia Seltos is among several Kia models affected by a security vulnerability that made them particularly vulnerable to theft between 2011 and 2022.
This flaw allowed thieves to bypass the ignition system by accessing the steering column and using a USB cable or similar metal object to start the engine, even without the key in the ignition.
The issue gained widespread attention in early 2021 after videos demonstrating this theft method went viral on social media.
To address these security concerns, Kia began equipping their vehicles with immobilizers starting in 2021, resulting in fewer 2022 models being produced without this feature.
Kia also offers a security update for owners of 2011–2021 models equipped with a twist-to-start ignition system. Despite these updates, certain Kia vehicles may still be at risk of theft.
To enhance the security of your Kia and reduce the risk of theft, consider taking the following precautions:
- Remove USB Cables: Always take USB cables with you when you leave your vehicle unattended.
- Use Anti-Theft Devices: Invest in a wheel lock or other anti-theft devices to further protect your vehicle.
- Avoid Storing Personal Documents in the Car: Keep your title and other personal documents out of the vehicle.
- Check for Updates: Regularly consult with your preferred dealership about any available software updates or recall notices related to vehicle security.
Kia Seltos Owner Concerns
“The car initially had electrical and engine issues since may of 2022. The engine would fail mid drive and the car would turn of in the middle of driving and would lock up until engine would restart on its own. It stayed at the dealership for repairs until march of 2023. After many modifications and alterations and several new engines and transmission changes they returned the car to me on march of 2023 assuring me it was fixed and there would be no issues. Several weeks later while driving on the highway, the engine turned off mid drive, I lost control of the car entirely. Brakes wouldn’t brake. Car crashed into highway median. And upon impact none of the airbags deployed.”
“While driving I noticed my Seltos felt like it was shifting hard. I then attempted to put it in reverse. There was NO reverse. I had to get bystanders to push me off the road. This is a safety risk because there were no warning signs that reverse would fail to engage. Kia states there is no recall, but several of same instances were found in forums. My car is scheduled at dealership next week. No rental, no recall, no warranty. I will have to pay out of pocket for something that has been known to fail.”
“Bought this car last year with 36 miles on it and a week in I called the dealership and informed them the car was acting weird. It was jerking and rpms randomly going up. When in idle you could hear a ticking/knocking sound from the engine. When at a red light/stop car wouldn’t go. When parked and engine turned off for a while engine would randomly turn back on by itself. I told dealership about this and they thought I was crazy so I did my own research they said it just needed a transmission computer software update. These issues continued and two transmissions updates later come to find out from other owners with similar issues the updates are just the start of a huge issue transmissions and engines are having to be replaced by the dealerships. I got rid of this car asap. Don’t buy it”
How the Lemon Law Applies to Your 2021 Kia Seltos
If you’re facing repeat issues with your 2021 Kia Seltos, you might be eligible for remedies under the lemon law.
This legislation is intended to protect consumers who buy or lease vehicles that fail to meet quality and performance expectations while still under warranty.
If your 2021 Seltos has repeatedly experienced the same problem and that issue substantially impacts the vehicle’s safety, usability, or value, you may have legal options available.
The specific remedies under the lemon law can differ based on your state’s regulations but generally include a refund, a replacement vehicle, or monetary compensation.
If you choose to receive a refund, the manufacturer may deduct a fee for the period during which the vehicle was used without issues. Similarly, opting for a replacement vehicle may require you to cover any price difference.
Typically, if your lemon law claim is successful, the vehicle manufacturer will be responsible for paying your legal fees and costs.
This provision enables you to pursue a resolution without incurring substantial legal expenses, making it a viable option for addressing persistent problems with your 2021 Kia Seltos.
