Common 2021 Kia Sorento Problems
- Drivetrain/Transmission: Limited acceleration, delayed gear changes
- Engine: Coolant leaks, stalling, power loss
- Electrical System: Dead battery, a/c unit issues, warning lights
2021 Kia Sorento Drivetrain Problems
Owners of the 2021 Kia Sorento have reported issues with their transmissions, including problems with the vehicle holding gears and requiring excessive throttle—50–60%—to accelerate properly.
This issue has prompted a recall for certain 2021 Sorento models due to a malfunction in the transmission oil pump.
This defect can compromise the vehicle’s “fail-safe” limited-mobility drive mode, leading to a potential total loss of drive power.
This loss of drive power poses a serious safety risk by increasing the chance of a crash. The recall is identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 22V760.
Through this recall, Kia instructed its dealers to inspect the affected transmissions and replace them if necessary. Additionally, the transmission control unit software will be updated to address the issue.
2021 Kia Sorento Engine Problems
The 2021 Kia Sorento has been associated with several notable engine problems. Among the reported issues are coolant leaks, which can lead to engine overheating, and sudden power loss while driving, posing a safety risk.
Some owners have also experienced unexpected stalling and delayed or unresponsive acceleration, which can further impact vehicle performance and safety.
In response to these engine problems, Kia has issued recalls for certain 2021 Sorento models. One significant recall involves a fuel leak issue that increases the risk of a vehicle fire.
This problem is identified under NHTSA Campaign Number 21V519 and affects 2021 Sorento vehicles equipped with 2.5L turbocharged engines.
The defect concerns a potential fuel leak at the pipe connection between the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel rail.
To address this issue, dealers will inspect the affected fuel pipes and either tighten or replace them as needed, at no cost to the vehicle owners.
2021 Kia Sorento Electrical System Problems
The 2021 Kia Sorento has been reported to have several electrical system issues. One common problem is that some vehicles perform an unexpected “system check” while driving, leading to a temporary loss of steering, brakes, and radio functionality.
There have also been reports from Kia drivers of intermittent electrical failures affecting windows and door locks, which can sometimes require multiple restarts to fix.
Other issues include unexpected stalling and radio blackouts, which persist even after restarting the vehicle.
A notable recall related to the electrical system involves a risk of fire caused by the tow hitch harness. This issue, identified under NHTSA Campaign Number 22V703, stems from debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module’s printed circuit board (PCB), which may lead to an electrical short and potential vehicle fire.
To address this safety concern, owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is completed.
Dealers will inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, replace the fuse or the tow hitch harness module at no cost to the owner.
‘21 Sorento Driver Concerns
“I had reported a momentary loss of power when driving the first time I took my vehicle for an oil change. Dealer said the car was just getting accustomed to my driving habits. I said I was in an intersection and the car lost power for a moment and I was almost rear-ended. It has happened many more times and it seemed as though it usually happened between 25-30 mph. Recently it has become more frequent. It’s happening at all speeds. Yesterday it seemed like it was choking like when you’re out of gas (it had 3/4 tank of gas). Today I was making a turn at a heavily traveled intersection, when rounding the corner vehicle lost power then banged into gear. I’ve never heard it bang like that before. Seems to be getting progressively worse and I’m now concerned for myself and others safety. I work 45 miles from home and depend on this vehicle.”
“My 2021 Kia Sorrento has shut down and died while on a Highway drive 2 days in a row. The engine light comes on, the oil light comes on, and and the phrase “Engine Off. Shift to N then start engine” comes on. Prior to this, other issues were happening. Originally, my automatic start wasn’t working properly, and a Kia service advisor told me to “turn that feature off”. After that, while driving down the road last month, all symbols on my dash began flashing and the phrase “Check forward safety system” appeared.”
“I only have 2200 miles and my blind spot monitoring system went out and 3 days or so later the transmission failed…wouldn’t switch to second gear without redlining. Engine light and service message came on and now it’s been sitting in the Kia dealership lot for weeks because they are so backed up…stay far away from the 2021 Sorento.”
A Guide to the Lemon Law Process
If you’re facing repeat issues with your 2021 Kia Sorento, you might be eligible for relief under the lemon law.
This legislation is designed to protect consumers who purchase or lease vehicles that repeatedly fail to meet quality and performance standards while still under warranty.
If your 2021 Sorento has undergone multiple repairs for the same or similar defect and this defect significantly impacts the vehicle’s safety, functionality, or value, you could be entitled to legal remedies such as a refund, replacement car or cash compensation.
The specific remedies available under lemon law vary by state, but they commonly include options such as a full refund, a replacement vehicle, or monetary compensation.
It’s important to be aware that if you receive a refund, the manufacturer might subtract a fee for the time you were able to use the vehicle without issues.
Similarly, if you choose a replacement vehicle, you may need to cover any difference in price between the new and the old vehicle.
In many cases, if your lemon law claim is successful, the vehicle manufacturer is obligated to cover your legal fees and costs.
This provision allows you to pursue a resolution without the financial burden of legal representation, making it a practical option for addressing persistent problems with your 2021 Kia Sorento.
