2021 Kia Soul Engine Problems

One of the most concerning engine issues reported by 2021 Kia Soul drivers is engine stalling, where the engine unexpectedly cuts off while driving.

This can be particularly hazardous, especially when it happens at high speeds or in traffic, increasing the risk of accidents.

Another common problem reported is excessive oil consumption with some 2021 Kia Soul vehicles reportedly burning as much as 1 to 2 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles, which is considered excessive and can lead to engine wear over time. In severe cases, this may result in engine damage if not addressed promptly.

Drivers have also reported incidents of the engine locking up, causing a complete loss of power while driving.

This issue can leave drivers stranded and potentially lead to dangerous situations. Loss of power is also a recurring complaint, where the vehicle loses power unexpectedly while driving, often accompanied by the illumination of the check engine light.

If you own a 2021 Kia Soul and are experiencing any of these issues, it is important to have your vehicle checked by a professional mechanic.

Contacting your local Kia dealership for assistance is also recommended to ensure the problem is properly diagnosed and resolved.

In April 2021, Kia issued a recall under NHTSA Campaign Number 21V-259 concerning certain 2021 Kia Soul models equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines.

The issue stems from improperly heat-treated piston oil rings, which may result in engine damage. If left unaddressed, this can lead to engine stalling, posing an increased risk of a crash. Additionally, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, creating the potential for a fire.

Kia Motors America has affected an estimated 147,249 units with this defect. In response, Kia will notify affected owners and arrange for dealers to inspect the engines.

If necessary, the engines will be replaced free of charge. Additionally, the Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software will be deployed to address the issue.

This recall began on June 11, 2021. Owners of affected vehicles can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 for more information, referencing recall number SC209.

2021 Kia Soul Transmission Problems

The 2021 Kia Soul has experienced several transmission-related issues that have been reported by owners.

One of the most common problems is delayed shifting, where drivers notice a lag when shifting gears.

This delay can create an uncomfortable driving experience and, in some cases, pose a safety risk if the vehicle does not respond as expected during gear changes.

Another frequent issue is jerking and hesitation, particularly when accelerating. This can be frustrating for drivers, as the vehicle may hesitate to move forward smoothly, affecting both comfort and safety, especially in situations that require quick acceleration.

Some 2021 Kia Soul owners have also noticed transmission slippage, a problem where the transmission seems to slip out of gear.

This can cause a sudden loss of power while driving, leaving the driver with less control over the vehicle, which can be dangerous, particularly on highways or in heavy traffic.

Additionally, there have also been reports of loud and clunking noises when shifting gears. These unusual sounds are often indicative of potential transmission issues, suggesting that the transmission may be experiencing internal problems that need to be addressed.

In the most severe cases, some owners have reported complete transmission failure, where the vehicle is unable to engage any gear at all. This renders the car inoperable and requires immediate attention.

If you’re experiencing any of these transmission problems with your 2021 Kia Soul, it’s highly recommended to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.

You can also contact your local Kia dealership for assistance to ensure that any issues are properly diagnosed and resolved.

2021 Kia Soul Electrical System Problems

The 2021 Kia Soul has experienced a number of reported electrical system problems, which can affect various functions of the vehicle.

One of the most significant issues is electrical system failure, where the entire electrical system stops functioning.

This can impact many components of the car, including essential features like lights, the infotainment system, and other electrical components.

Another common problem involves burnt fuses and damaged wiring. Some owners have reported issues with fuses burning out and wiring becoming damaged, which can lead to malfunctioning lights, including headlights, taillights, and other electrical systems in the vehicle.

This not only affects the vehicle’s functionality but can also create potential safety hazards, especially when driving at night or in poor weather conditions.

Battery drain is also a recurring issue, with some owners noticing that their battery drains quickly even when the vehicle is not in use.

This can be frustrating and may lead to the car not starting, requiring frequent recharging or even battery replacement.

Drivers also regularly report malfunctioning lights, including problems with headlights, taillights, and brake lights not working properly.

This can be particularly concerning from a safety perspective, as non-functioning lights can make the vehicle less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of accidents.

If you’re experiencing any of these electrical system problems with your 2021 Kia Soul, we highly recommend having your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.

You may also want to contact your local Kia dealership for assistance in addressing these issues.

Kia Soul Complaints from Owners

Kia Soul Complaints from Owners

  1. NHTSA Complaint

“The vehicle experiences a complete loss of power when slowing to a stop before it powers off on its own. The car powers off while going down the road. The car experiences partial loss of power while on cruise control and the car will slow to nearly stopped. The immediate loss of power puts myself and others at risk as the car is now stopping unexpected on the highway. I have left numerous voicemails for service managers at the dealership it was purchased brand-new from 2 years ago. They have not reached out to me. I had an appointment at their dealership to have the car inspected to see if this was covered with my warranty and they explained my warranty was only 60k miles and my car is now at 65k miles.”

“For years I have been experiencing the vehicle stalling, shutting off while driving, smelling oil burning and oil is disappearing which has me going to get an oil change every 1000 miles. Low oil light has never came on even when oil reservoir has been bone dry. My safety is jeopardized every time I drive this vehicle. This issue has been addressed to service center and they state according to Kia the excessive oil leak is “normal” and it’s not with any other vehicle. Also the service center does not know why oil is leaking or where oil is leaking which is a major concern. I no longer have free oil changes because I have used them all up due to multiple services for oil changes.”

“I bought a brand new 2021 Kia Soul February 13, 2021. 8 weeks later it is in the shop needing a new transmission. It has been 2 weeks and not one single call from Kia. The transmission is on back order and I am driving a rental car which I am paying $22/day for insurance. I have a case number with Kia, but it is useless because their customer service is absolutely horrible. I wish I had never bought it. I will be filing a lemon law claim.”

Leveraging the Lemon Law

If you’re experiencing persistent problems with your 2021 Kia Soul, you might be eligible for protection under your state’s Lemon Law.

This law is designed to support consumers who purchase or lease vehicles that fail to meet expected standards of quality and performance while still under warranty.

If your 2021 Kia Soul is facing recurring issues that impact its safety, usability, or value, you may have legal options available to resolve these matters.

Lemon Law remedies differ depending on the state, but they generally include choices such as a refund, a replacement vehicle, or monetary compensation.

If you choose a refund, the manufacturer may subtract an amount based on the time the vehicle was used without issues. For a replacement vehicle, you may need to pay the difference in price, if applicable, and a usage fee.

Typically, if your Lemon Law claim is successful, the manufacturer will cover your legal fees and related expenses.

This provision makes pursuing a claim more accessible, allowing you to seek a resolution without incurring significant legal costs, especially when dealing with ongoing problems in your 2021 Kia Soul.
