2021 Kia Sportage Engine Problems
One of the most reported engine problems in the 2021 Kia Sportage is excessive oil consumption, with many drivers noticing that their Sportage consumes oil at a much higher rate than expected.
Another frequent complaint is engine knocking, which often stems from improperly secured piston rods. This knocking sound can be a sign of serious engine damage if left unchecked.
Turbocharger failures are another significant issue reported by 2021 Sportage drivers. A failing turbocharger can lead to a loss of engine power and is often accompanied by a loud whining noise, indicating that immediate attention is needed.
Fuel pump failures have also been reported, leading to stalling or even complete engine shutdown.
Certain 2021 Kia Sportage engine issues have prompted a recall by the NHTSA. Identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 21V137, one engine-related recall was issued on March 3, 2021, due to a potential short circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).
This defect posed a serious risk of an engine compartment fire. As a precautionary measure, Kia advised owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repairs were completed.
If you’re experiencing any of these engine issues with your 2021 Kia Sportage, you should have your vehicle checked by a professional mechanic.
Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these problems from escalating and keep your Sportage running smoothly.
2021 Kia Sportage Electrical System Problems
The 2021 Kia Sportage is prone to a range of electrical system issues, including battery problems, infotainment errors, and vulnerabilities in the vehicle’s security system.
These appear to be common issues for Kia drivers, with drivers reporting all kinds of anomalies involving accessories in the electrical system. Among the worst are reports of interior flooding and overheating.
One recall identified by NHTSA Campaign Number 22V-703 was issued on September 19, 2022. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module’s printed circuit board (PCB) can lead to severe issues, including the risk of vehicle fires.
Kia instructed owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repairs were completed.
Dealers were tasked with inspecting the vehicle and replacing the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module if necessary.
Owners were notified of this recall through letters sent out on August 11, 2023. If your Sportage is included in this recall, we highly recommend following Kia’s instructions on parking your vehicle away from large structures until it has received the recall-related fix.
2021 Kia Sportage Structural Problems
One of the most frequently reported bodywork problems in the 2021 Kia Sportage involves paint quality, with many owners noting that the paint tends to chip easily, particularly on the hood and front bumper. Problems such as fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking paint have been noted,
Rust is another common issue with some drivers observing rust developing on the undercarriage and around the edges of the doors prematurely. If left unaddressed, this rust could potentially cause more severe damage to the vehicle over time.
In addition to these issues, there have been complaints about misaligned body panels. Poor panel alignment not only detracts from the vehicle’s overall appearance but can also negatively impact its aerodynamics.
For those who are experiencing any of these bodywork issues, you should have the vehicle inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
Other reported problems with the 2021 Kia Sportage include uneven tire wear, malfunctions with exterior lighting, and issues with the lane departure system.
If you are experiencing any of these issues with your Sportage, addressing them promptly is essential to prevent further complications and ensure your vehicle remains in good working order.

The contact stated that the vehicle caught fire. The contact began to extinguish the fire with the assistance of sheriffs who used fire extinguishers until the fire department arrived and took over. There were no injuries sustained. A fire department report was filed. A police report was filed. The vehicle remained at the scene and was totaled.”
“The infotainment system has bubbles, and it interferes with touch screen process. I have seen lots of people that have different KIA’s that have the same issue. This should be considered a RECALL due to how so many KIA’s that have the same issue.
“I have always been an avid Kia supporter and will never purchase one again. We have a 2020 Kia Sportage S that we bought brand new. Within 8 months and 9,000 miles my car wouldn’t start so it was towed to the dealership. No problems found with the car it was supposed to be in perfect working order. Exactly one month later it wouldn’t start again, towed to the dealership again. Once again no problems they cant find anything wrong with it. Fast forward now to 6 months later the car has been towed multiple times and corporate will not authorize repairs which is either the battery or the alternator. The car was just towed this past week and once it is back we are trading it in for anything else. I literally had one of the corporate customer service reps tell me that I just needed to accept what the dealership was telling me and that there was nothing wrong with my car and sometimes cars just don’t start.”
