Short answer: The biggest problems with the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta are brake problems, electrical system issues, and forward collision avoidance system problems.
Brake problems are the most common while electrical system and forward collision avoidance system problems aren’t as common.
Some of these problems have even resulted in recalls: Volkswagen has issued four for this vehicle.
The 2021 Jetta is a compact, sporty vehicle intending to provide an overall pleasant driving experience. Even though that’s what it should deliver, some owners purchase defective vehicles and have to deal with the consequences later.
In this article, we discuss the most commonly reported problems with the 2021 Jetta and how you can use the lemon law to get back on the road!

Common 2021 Volkswagen Jetta Problems
2021 VW Jetta Brake Problems
2021 Jetta owners mainly reported their brake pads wearing unevenly, particularly the rear brakes and rotors.
Brakes Wearing Unevenly
- Severity: Light to moderate; uneven brake wear is usually not dangerous by itself, but it can shorten brake life and reduce braking quality if not addressed.
- Manufacturer’s Response: Volkswagen has not issued a recall or TSB for this issue, but it did issue a Rear Brake Pad Limited Warranty Extension, extending rear brake pad coverage from 1 year/12,000 miles to 2 years/24,000 miles. That indicates Volkswagen recognized premature rear pad wear as a recurring issue.
- Fix: Owners should have the rear pads and rotors inspected, especially if wear appears much faster than the front brakes. Pad and rotor replacement may be needed if premature wear is confirmed.
2021 VW Jetta Electrical System Issues
Owners of the 2021 VW Jetta described general infotainment system glitches, including inoperable rearview cameras.
Infotainment System Glitches
- Severity: Moderate; infotainment glitches are frustrating, and a blank rearview camera image can make reversing less safe.
- Manufacturer’s Response: Volkswagen issued two recalls that are relevant to 2021 Jetta rearview camera/display failures: 20V-716 and 22V-514. Both involve conditions where the rearview camera image may be delayed, frozen, or unavailable.
- Fix: Volkswagen’s remedy in both recalls is a software update to the infotainment/rearview camera system, performed free of charge.
2021 VW Jetta Forward Collision Avoidance System Problems
Owners of the 2021 Jetta reported this system randomly disabling cruise control and, in some situations, engaging the emergency brakes.
Deactivating Cruise Control and Emergency Brakes Engaging
- Severity: Moderate to severe; unexpected braking or sudden loss of cruise control can increase crash risk depending on road and traffic conditions.
- Manufacturer’s Response: Volkswagen issued TSB 45-21-01, which addresses unwarranted Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) events. Volkswagen’s guidance focuses on confirming the behavior, reviewing driver-assistance system limitations, and documenting the condition carefully before repair decisions are made. Volkswagen also issued TSB WLA-22-15 covering ACC calibration process concerns, which may be relevant when cruise-control or radar-related issues are present.
- Fix: Volkswagen’s guidance is to document the event, inspect and evaluate the radar/camera system, and recalibrate or repair affected components as needed. ACC calibration may also be required depending on the source of the fault.

Volkswagen Jetta Owner Issues
“The right rear brake disk and inner pad wore out prematurely. Only the inside of the brake disk and pad were worn, metal to metal. ALL other brake disks and brake pads were “normal” for a car with 22,000 miles.”
“The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed with adaptive cruise control on, the vehicle inadvertently applied the brakes completely bringing the vehicle to a complete stop in the middle of the roadway, after which the vehicle then shifted into the parked position. The contact also stated, that later while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly steered itself to the left towards oncoming traffic before the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle…”
“Shifting vehicle into reverse, turns of back up camera, then shifting into drive camera remains on for a set period of time, if shifted back into reverse as camera turns off, camera will not come back on. Android Auto was being used.”
Seeking Justice Under the Lemon Law
Lemon laws provide protection when a vehicle develops substantial defects during the warranty period and those issues are not repaired after a reasonable number of attempts.
If ongoing problems affect the vehicle’s safety, reliability, or value, or if it remains out of service for an extended time, the manufacturer may be obligated to offer a refund, replacement, or financial compensation.
These laws are designed to ensure consumers are not left with unresolved manufacturing defects.
| Affected Model | Average Lemon Law Settlement |
| 2021 Volkswagen Jetta | $42,875 |
