Common problems: Some of the most common problems with the 2022 Ford Escape include electrical system failures, engine issues, and structural defects.
These problems have prompted several recalls—at least 12 in total according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—addressing everything from high-voltage battery risks to door structure failures.
Below, you’ll find a detailed breakdown of the most frequently reported issues and official recalls affecting the 2022 Escape.
Whether you’re an owner or considering a purchase, this article will help you understand the most critical complaints tied to this SUV and what steps you may need to take if your vehicle is affected.
Common 2022 Ford Escape Problems
- Engine: Excessive Oil Consumption; Engine Stalling; Engine Shutdowns; High-Voltage Battery Failures
- Fuel System: Fuel Injection System Issues; Canister Purge Valve Issues
- Electrical System: High-Voltage Battery Issues; Loss of Power
- Structure: Premature Wear; Paint and Body Quality Issues
2022 Ford Escape Engine Problems
The 2022 Ford Escape has been linked to serious and numerous engine-related issues from drivers. One common issue is excessive oil consumption, with several owners reporting that their Escape burns through oil at an unusually fast rate, often without warning. This has led to concerns about long-term engine reliability.
Additionally, engine stalling has been noted as another troubling symptom. Drivers have described situations where the vehicle stalls unexpectedly during operation, posing a significant safety risk on the road.
Another alarming complaint involves engine shutdowns while driving, with some reports stating that the engine dies completely without warning, leaving the vehicle disabled and increasing the chance of a crash.
For those with hybrid versions of the Escape, high-voltage battery failures have also been reported. In these cases, vehicle shutdowns and even fire risks have been linked to the faulty battery systems.
A major recall tied to this issue was announced under NHTSA Campaign Number 23V-380. This recall affects over 125,000 units, including 2022 Escape models with 2.5L HEV or PHEV engines.
According to the recall, a catastrophic engine failure can lead to the release of oil and fuel vapor into the engine compartment, potentially causing a fire if these substances reach hot engine components.
Ford’s fix includes replacing the engine long-block in some vehicles or updating the powertrain control module in others. This recall supersedes a prior one (22V-484), meaning previously repaired vehicles must undergo the new remedy as well.
The prior related recall, 22V-484, also covers 2022 Ford Escape models equipped with 2.5L HEV or PHEV engines.
It highlights the risk of engine compartment fires in the event of engine failure, particularly due to oil and fuel vapor accumulation near ignition sources.
Another safety recall, 22V-191, affects over 345,000 units and addresses a cracked engine oil separator housing, which can lead to oil leaks. If this leaked oil contacts hot engine parts, the risk of a fire increases.
Ford’s remedy involves inspecting and potentially replacing the oil separator and its seals.
Altogether, the number and nature of these recalls suggest that 2022 Ford Escape owners—especially those with hybrid models—should take engine and powertrain symptoms seriously.
If you’re experiencing stalling, oil loss, or unexplained loss of power, it’s worth contacting your dealer or checking your VIN on the NHTSA website to see if your vehicle is affected by any open recalls.
2022 Ford Escape Fuel System Problems
Some 2022 Ford Escape drivers have reported persistent problems with the gasoline fuel system, particularly with fuel injection components, which can impact engine operation and overall vehicle reliability.
In multiple cases, drivers noted decreased performance and difficulties starting the vehicle—symptoms often tied to fuel delivery issues.
One specific problem involves the canister purge valve, which several owners say required replacement. When this valve malfunctions, it can prevent the vehicle from starting properly or lead to rough idling and check engine lights.
Additionally, complaints involving the fuel/propulsion system suggest these issues may not be isolated, as some drivers experienced reduced engine efficiency or unexpected power loss.
More alarming, however, are the growing fire risks linked to defective fuel injectors. On March 8, 2024, Ford issued Recall 24V-187.
According to Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a cracked fuel injector can leak fuel inside the engine compartment, leading to an increased fire risk if the fuel reaches a hot surface.
The recall remedy includes two steps: an engine control software update that detects pressure drops in the fuel rail and sends a service alert to the driver, and the installation of a drain tube to redirect leaking fuel away from ignition sources. Notably, this recall does not involve replacing the faulty injector itself.
This recall was deemed an expansion of an earlier campaign, 22V-859, launched on November 18, 2022. That recall warned of the same defect—fuel injector cracks that could result in engine compartment fires.
The remedy was similar, with dealers instructed to install the same software update and drain tube, though many owners felt the fix was insufficient.
Adding to the concern, NHTSA opened an active investigation (Action Number: RQ24008) on April 11, 2024, to assess whether Ford’s current remedy under 24V-187 is adequate.
The probe focuses on reports of underhood fires in vehicles that had already received the recall fix. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is evaluating whether additional steps—such as replacing cracked injectors—should be mandated to fully resolve the safety issue.
For 2022 Ford Escape owners, especially those with the 1.5L engine, it’s important to watch for signs such as fuel odors, poor engine performance, or unusual engine compartment heat. These could indicate a serious issue that might be covered under an open recall.
Owners should visit the NHTSA recall website or contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to check whether their vehicle is affected.
2022 Ford Escape Electrical System Problems
The 2022 Ford Escape has drawn attention for a number of electrical system issues, particularly in hybrid models.
Among the most serious concerns are high-voltage battery failures, which have been linked to sudden power loss and, in extreme cases, potential fire risks.
Several owners have reported instances where the vehicle abruptly lost power while driving, often accompanied by illuminated warning lights on the dashboard.
These experiences have raised safety concerns, especially when failures occurred during highway driving or in heavy traffic.
A significant recall addressing these issues was first announced under NHTSA Campaign Number 22V-149.
This recall cited the possibility of high-voltage battery failure leading to a complete loss of drive power. Ford responded by offering to replace the high-voltage battery at no cost to affected customers.
Battery-related problems don’t seem to stop there, however. A more recent recall—NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-954—was issued in December 2024 and impacts over 20,000 vehicles, including 2020–2024 Ford Escapes and 2021–2024 Lincoln Corsairs.
This newer recall involves a manufacturing defect in one or more battery cells, which may cause an internal short circuit. Such a failure not only increases the risk of a crash due to loss of drive power but also poses a fire hazard.
As a precaution, Ford has advised affected vehicle owners not to charge their vehicles until the repairs have been made.
The remedy for this recall involves a two-step process: dealers will first perform a battery energy control module (BECM) software update and then, if necessary, replace the high-voltage battery pack.
While interim notices were sent out in January 2025, the parts needed to complete repairs are not expected to be available until the second quarter of 2025.
This delay has left some owners frustrated, particularly those relying on the hybrid Escape for daily commutes.
If you own a 2022 Ford Escape and are experiencing electrical issues or have received a recall notice, you should follow up with a Ford dealership as soon as possible.
Not only can these problems affect your vehicle’s performance, but they also pose serious safety risks if left unaddressed.
2022 Ford Escape Structure Problems
Some 2022 Ford Escape owners have reported issues related to the vehicle’s structural integrity, with two key problem areas standing out.
The first involves body and paint quality—several complaints point to premature wear and subpar paint durability, raising concerns about long-term vehicle appearance and corrosion protection.
These cosmetic and structural flaws can be frustrating for owners who expect better finish quality from a relatively new model year.
One of the more serious structural concerns involves the door check arm brackets, which are intended to help hold the doors open at specific angles and assist with smooth door operation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a preliminary investigation—Action Number PE23013—was opened in July 2023 after hundreds of complaints surfaced, primarily from owners of 2020–2021 Escape models, though the 2022 model may share similar components.
Many drivers described popping or snapping noises when opening or closing the front doors. This sound was often an early warning of welds between the door structure and the check arm bracket beginning to fail.
The failure of these welds can lead to reduced functionality of the doors, including difficulty opening or closing, inability to latch properly, or in rare cases, inadvertent door openings.
Although Ford’s internal testing didn’t reproduce doors opening while parked or in motion, the complaints were significant enough for the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) to take action.
Some reports even included injuries, usually minor bumps or bruises caused by doors closing unexpectedly on occupants entering or exiting the vehicle.
In response, Ford introduced a customer satisfaction program (23B56) offering a one-time repair. Starting in March 2024, owners were expected to receive letters inviting them to visit a Ford dealership for a free inspection.
Depending on the severity of the damage, Ford will either reinforce the existing door structure with a rivet plate or replace the entire door.
Customers who previously paid out of pocket for similar repairs may also be eligible for reimbursement.
While the preliminary evaluation has since been closed, the NHTSA emphasized that the decision does not rule out the existence of a safety-related defect.
The agency reserves the right to reopen the investigation if new information emerges. Owners noticing unusual door behavior—such as increased resistance, visible weld damage, or strange noises—should consider having their vehicle inspected to prevent the issue from worsening over time.

Owner Issues with the Ford Escape
“When on the EV setting: Battery Charged by Engine, gas and electrical smells are evident in the cabin. This first began in August 2023 at highway speeds and was reported the to the dealer during a pre trip inspection in Sept 2023. has been consistently increasing each time that EV mode is selected. most recent occurrence was last week when driving in a residential area at a stoplight. Had to shut off vehicle when the smell became overwhelming. Reported to Ford and to dealer.”
“During vehicle operation, on occasion, entire vehicle instrument panel goes dark and shuts off, which includes speedometer and warning lights. Cruise control deactivates and all displays and warning indicators de-luminate. System will turn back on and flash multiple error codes before returning to normal. Sync/navigation system will also go out.”
“High hopes when first received. Good in fair weather conditions, however if it snows more than 1 inch, gets in sand or mud, better get a tow plan, you’ll need it. Deep snow, sand mode is absolutely uneffective in these conditions. Transmission has hard shifts. Rear end screeches when wet or cold on reverse. At 37,000 miles, the original tires are down to 1/32 even with regular tire totations. Co-worker with same year and model, exact same tire results with no rotations. His Escape is shutting off randomly while driving, started off at 30,000 as dash going blank, then same with gauges inoperable and finally entire vehicle shuts off while driving. Worst vehicle I’ve had in 30+ years.”
