2023 Honda CRV Steering Problems

This problem, often described as “sticky steering,” is most noticeable at highway speeds after extended driving periods.
The issue has been attributed to two primary manufacturing defects. First, internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel, resulting from annealing and conditioning processes, gradually release over time, causing deformation of the worm wheel’s teeth.
This deformation leads to the worm gear catching on the worm wheel, resulting in increased steering effort.
Second, inconsistent grease application during manufacturing left some vehicles with insufficient lubrication, exacerbating the problem.
During testing, NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) was able to replicate the increased steering effort.
Their findings also revealed that grease was being displaced from the meshing area of the worm gear, further increasing friction.
Complaints regarding this issue have steadily increased, and NHTSA received reports of 23 crashes attributed to the defect.
In response, recall campaign number 24V-744 was issued, citing steering gearbox damage that could lead to difficulty steering, increasing the risk of a crash.
The defect stems from improper manufacturing of the steering gearbox assembly, which causes excessive internal friction and results in steering difficulties.
To remedy the issue, Honda dealerships will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge.
Following the recall announcement, the NHTSA closed its engineering analysis but reserves the right to take further action if necessary.
