Short answer: The biggest problems with the 2023 Honda HRV are structure problems, electrical system issues, and steering problems.
Structure problems are the most common, followed by steering problems and electrical system issues. Some of these problems have even resulted in recalls: Honda has issued three for this vehicle.
Honda’s 2023 HRV is an updated version of their popular small SUV, coming equipped with features like Honda’s LaneWatch lanekeeping assist and HondaLink software.
Though many consumers get to enjoy these features throughout their vehicle’s lifespan, some get stuck with vehicles that left the factory defective.
In this article, we go over the most reported problems by 2023 Honda HRV owners.

Common 2023 Honda HRV Problems
2023 Honda HRV Structure Problems
Consumers primarily reported their rear windows spontaneously shattering. This problem was very widely reported.
Rear Window Shattering
- Severity: Moderate; while the glass shattering can startle drivers and create a hazard, it does not typically affect vehicle control.
- Manufacturer’s Response: Honda has issued multiple TSBs related to rear window shattering, though they mainly document the issue: NHTSA TSB 10236085, 10237035, and 10237186.
- Fix: Honda seems to be working on a fix for this issue; none exist yet.
2023 Honda HRV Electrical System Issues
Some owners believe the rear window shattering issue may be linked to the rear defroster system, particularly due to stress near the heating elements.
Potential Defroster Shattering
- Severity: Moderate; loss of rear defroster functionality can reduce visibility in cold weather, in addition to the risks associated with shattered glass.
- Manufacturer’s Response: The same TSBs potentially address this issue, NHTSA TSB 10236085, 10237035, and 10237186.
- Fix: The fix for this issue is still not known, although drivers may wish to refrain from using their defrosters in the meantime.
2023 Honda HRV Steering Problems
2023 Honda HRV owners mainly reported their frustrations with a lack of available parts for a steering-related recall; some also mentioned their steering locking up.
Steering Locking Up
- Severity: Severe; a vehicle with locked up steering cannot be safely driven, as the driver cannot properly control it.
- Manufacturer’s Response: Honda issued NHTSA Recall ID #24V-744, addressing a defect in the steering gearbox worm gear spring, which may lead to difficulty steering.
- Fix: Honda’s remedy is to replace the worm gear spring and apply additional grease as needed. This repair is performed free of charge.

What HR-V Drivers Say . . .
“The car is making a rotting sound when I start accelerating and it didn’t make that sound before. It feels like it is the catalytic converter. I bought this car brand new, so it is a bit annoying that I am having this issue with a new car that I been having it for less than 3 years.”
“Valve cover started leaking after 3rd oil change in dealership. Took it in and they retorqued to factory spec, applied silicone and cleaned it under the included drivetrain warranty. They did not replace my valve cover like I thought they would. This should not be happening on a year old vehicle with about 15900 miles.”
“I was driving in the highway when the rear windshield pop out of nowhere completly shattered, there were no cars near by. Cant recall if the defroster was on but the weather was around 70 degrees.”
Lemon Law Rights for Owners of Defective Vehicles
Lemon laws exist to protect consumers when a vehicle fails to perform as expected during the warranty period due to ongoing defects.
If a substantial issue continues after multiple repair attempts or keeps the vehicle out of service for an extended time, the manufacturer may be legally required to provide compensation, a replacement vehicle, or a buyback.
These protections apply to defects that meaningfully impact a vehicle’s safety, reliability, or value. Service records, repair orders, and documentation of dealership visits often play an important role in determining whether a vehicle meets the legal threshold for a lemon law claim.
| Affected Model | Average Lemon Law Settlement |
| 2023 Honda HRV | $48,037 |
