Common 2023 Hyundai Elantra Problems

2023 Hyundai Elantra Electrical System Problems

Owners of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra have reported issues involving screen malfunctions, warning lights, and battery-related concerns.

Infotainment System Glitches

  • Severity: Moderate; electrical issues can interfere with access to vehicle information and features, making the driving experience less reliable.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Hyundai has released a TSB for infotainment system issues, 24-BE-002H. Other potentially related TSBs include 25-BE-002H, 25-BE-020H, 25-01-010H-1, and 26-BE-008H.
  • Fix: Hyundai’s fix for this issue is a software update to the infotainment system.

2023 Hyundai Elantra Forward Collision Avoidance System Issues

Some Elantra owners have reported that the system may activate unexpectedly or display warnings without an apparent reason.

False Collision Warnings or Emergency Braking

  • Severity: Moderate to severe; unexpected braking or alerts can startle drivers and increase the risk of a collision, especially if other drivers don’t react in time.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Hyundai released TSB 26-AD-001H which may be related to this issue.
  • Fix: Dealers should inspect and recalibrate forward-facing sensors (camera/radar) and apply software updates if available. The TSB above also mentions a potential camera replacement if necessary.

2023 Hyundai Elantra Engine Problems

Some 2023 Hyundai Elantra owners have reported issues involving hesitation, rough running, or occasional stalling. There is also a recall with a fire risk for the electric oil pump assembly, which can overheat.

Engine Hesitation and Stalling

  • Severity: Moderate to severe; engine hesitation or stalling can result in loss of power, creating potentially unsafe driving conditions for the driver and others on the road.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Hyundai has not issued a TSB or recall for this issue.
  • Fix: Diagnosis typically involves scanning for fault codes, inspecting fuel and ignition systems, and applying software updates or repairs as needed.

Electric Oil Pump Assembly Recall

  • Severity: Severe; the defect can create a fire risk, even when the vehicle is parked.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Yes, Hyundai has announced Recall 23V-526 for this issue.
  • Fix: Dealers will replace the electric oil pump assembly and related components, free of charge. Owners are often advised to park outside and away from structures until repairs are completed.

What Hyundai Elantra Drivers Say

NHTSA Complaint

“While driving at the freeway, the car engine failed. Car alarms went off and digital dashboard show alert of the engine failure. Battery and all other symbols in the dashboard lighted up as well. The vehicle lost speed. Dashboard displayed text indicating to shift gear to neutral and to press the start engine button. Engine restarted after following directions.”

NHTSA Complaint

“On multiple accounts did I find my 2023 Hyundai Elantra SEL rear camera not working. Now it displays a green screen and I’ve tested it but with someone directly right behind me while in reverse (not moving) the sensors aren’t going off. This is a huge safety concern for a lot of people who own Elantras.”

NHTSA Complaint

“While driving in the rain, car reported “Check Forward Safety System”. Error has not gone away multiple weeks later. Hyundai dealer’s first reaction was “Oh yes, this happens all the time” (!!) but then refused warranty repair because car is in other than pristine condition, despite being only two years old, still under warranty, with pristine front bumper. Without this sensor, adaptive cruise control, collision warning system, and automatic emergency braking do not work.”

Legal Steps for Troubled Car Owners

Lemon laws protect consumers when a vehicle develops substantial defects during the warranty period that are not corrected after a reasonable number of repair attempts.

When problems affecting safety, reliability, or value persist despite repairs, or when the vehicle remains out of service for an extended period, the manufacturer may be required to provide a refund, replacement, or compensation.

Service records, repair orders, and documentation of dealership visits often play an important role in determining whether a vehicle qualifies under lemon law protections. These documents can be critical if you decide to bring a claim against the manufacturer.
