Nearly 90,000 Audi Q5 Quattro Models Recalled for Potential Engine Oil Leak

Audi has announced a new Engine Oil Leak Recall affecting approximately 5% or 4,470 of the nearly 90,000 recalled 2022–2024 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro models.

This recall was issued due to a manufacturing defect that could increase the risk of engine fires.

The issue stems from cylinder head cover screws that may not have been properly tightened during assembly.

As a result, engine oil can leak from the screw holes and, if it meets hot engine parts, potentially cause a vehicle fire.

So far, 2,539 warranty claims and 11 reports of engine-related “thermal events” have been associated with the Audi engine oil leak defect.

In response, the automaker has issued recall number 15ZK. Dealerships will inspect affected vehicles and replace the cylinder head cover screws as needed, free of charge. Owners can expect to receive official notification letters starting July 8, 2025.

Drivers may not notice early signs of an oil leak, but in more advanced cases—especially when the engine is hot—they may detect a burning smell or see smoke coming from the engine compartment.

What Causes the Audi Q5 Oil Leak Issue?

In a statement, Audi explained that inconsistencies in the tightening torque during production mean that a secure seal cannot be guaranteed in all vehicles.

The problem was first identified in May 2023 after Audi received reports of oil leaks from the cylinder head covers.

Engineers launched an investigation and discovered that burrs on the screws may have interfered with achieving the proper torque, causing the screws to loosen over time.

Once loosened, the seal on the cylinder head cover may become compromised, allowing engine oil to escape. If this leaked oil reaches hot components under the hood, it can increase the likelihood of a fire.

Audi became aware of the issue after receiving more than 2,500 warranty claims and at least 11 reports of engine fires or overheating linked to oil leakage.

In the early stages, these leaks may be difficult for drivers to detect. However, when the engine is hot, advanced leaks can lead to a noticeable burning smell or even visible smoke coming from the engine compartment.

In such cases, Audi advises drivers to pull over and park the vehicle immediately to avoid potential damage or danger.

Which Audi Models Are Affected?

The recall applies to the Audi Q5 Quattro and Audi Q5 Sportback Quattro from model years 2022 through 2024.

These vehicles feature 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engines, and the problem originates from improperly torqued cylinder head cover screws that may cause oil leaks and increase the risk of engine fires.
