Audi Q5 Quattro Models Recalled for Potential Engine Oil Leak

Audi has announced a new Engine Oil Leak Recall affecting approximately 5% or 4,470 of the nearly 90,000 recalled 2022–2024 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro models.

This recall was issued due to a manufacturing defect that could increase the risk of engine fires.

The issue stems from cylinder head cover screws that may not have been properly tightened during assembly.

As a result, engine oil can leak from the screw holes and, if it meets hot engine parts, potentially cause a vehicle fire.

So far, 2,539 warranty claims and 11 reports of engine-related “thermal events” have been associated with the Audi engine oil leak defect.

In response, the automaker has issued recall number 15ZK. Dealerships will inspect affected vehicles and replace the cylinder head cover screws as needed, free of charge. Owners can expect to receive official notification letters starting July 8, 2025.

Drivers may not notice early signs of an oil leak, but in more advanced cases—especially when the engine is hot—they may detect a burning smell or see smoke coming from the engine compartment.

If these symptoms appear, Audi advises owners to stop the vehicle immediately and contact their dealer. Concerned owners can also call Audi’s customer service line at 1-800-253-2834.

What Causes the Audi Q5 Oil Leak Issue?

In a statement, Audi explained that inconsistencies in the tightening torque during production mean that a secure seal cannot be guaranteed in all vehicles.

The problem was first identified in May 2023 after Audi received reports of oil leaks from the cylinder head covers.

Engineers launched an investigation and discovered that burrs on the screws may have interfered with achieving the proper torque, causing the screws to loosen over time.

Once loosened, the seal on the cylinder head cover may become compromised, allowing engine oil to escape. If this leaked oil reaches hot components under the hood, it can increase the likelihood of a fire.

Audi became aware of the issue after receiving more than 2,500 warranty claims and at least 11 reports of engine fires or overheating linked to oil leakage.

In the early stages, these leaks may be difficult for drivers to detect. However, when the engine is hot, advanced leaks can lead to a noticeable burning smell or even visible smoke coming from the engine compartment.

In such cases, Audi advises drivers to pull over and park the vehicle immediately to avoid potential damage or danger.

Which Audi Models Are Affected?

The recall applies to the Audi Q5 Quattro and Audi Q5 Sportback Quattro from model years 2022 through 2024.

These vehicles feature 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engines, and the problem originates from improperly torqued cylinder head cover screws that may cause oil leaks and increase the risk of engine fires.

If you own one of these models and would like to schedule recall repairs, we recommend:

  • Checking your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website
  • Contacting your Audi dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair

Does Audi Have a Solution?

Yes, Audi’s recall remedy involves inspecting the cylinder head cover screws to ensure they are properly tightened. If any screws are found to be defective or improperly torqued, dealers will replace them with correctly manufactured and torqued screws.

All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner. Because some affected vehicles fall outside the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, Audi is also offering a reimbursement plan for eligible owners. Manufacturing improvements were implemented in May 2024 to prevent this issue in future vehicles. Dealers are scheduled to begin performing inspections and repairs on or before May 9, 2025. Official recall notifications will be mailed to owners starting July 8, 2025. The internal Audi recall number for this campaign is 15ZK.

How the Lemon Law Can Help with Repeat Issues

If you’re dealing with repeated problems in your vehicle—such as a recurring oil leak or another serious defect—you may be protected under your state’s lemon law.

These laws are designed to help consumers whose vehicles suffer from defects that substantially affect their use, safety, or value, even after multiple repair attempts.

Generally, a vehicle may qualify as a “lemon” if the same issue continues despite a reasonable number of opportunities to fix it.

While the specific requirements vary by state, common standards include multiple unsuccessful repair attempts for the same problem, repairs involving serious safety concerns, or a vehicle that spends an extended time in the shop for warranty-covered issues.

If your vehicle meets your state’s lemon law criteria, you could be entitled to a refund, a replacement vehicle, and in some cases, reimbursement for related expenses like towing or rental cars.

Many lemon laws also require the manufacturer to cover your attorney’s fees if you win your case.

To strengthen your claim, keep thorough documentation of all repair visits, invoices, and communications with the dealership or manufacturer.

Reviewing your state’s lemon law guidelines or speaking with a lemon law attorney—many of whom offer free consultations—can help you understand your options and take the right steps toward a resolution.
