Many of you might remember the recalls issued by BMW of North America back in 2010 regarding defects with the fuel system delivery systems in the 1, 3 and 5 series BMWs. But, in case you don’t remember these recalls, the Lemon Law Experts at Consumer Law Experts wish to fully inform you of your rights under California’s lemon laws.

In 2010, BMW of North America issued two recalls for more than 150,000 possible lemon BMWs. The recalls were to provide repairs for defective fuel systems in BMWs equipped with turbo-charged engines. The defects in the affected cars can cause failure of the high-pressure fuel pump, which can result in many problems including but not limited to the engine not cranking, a long crank, reduced engine performance and the illumination of the service and check engine lights. Should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and braking systems.

As a result of the defects with the fuel pumps and fuel systems, many of the affected lemon BMWs have been constantly in the shop getting repaired and/or requiring a replacement of the high pressure fuel pump.

Specifically, the recalls affect the BMW 335i (2007-2010 model years), 135i (2008-2010 model years), 535i (2008-2010 model years), X6 xDrive35i (2008-2010 model years), 2008 X5, and Z4 sDrive35i (2009-2010 model years).

Consumers should know that both BMW and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) have received thousands of owner complaints regarding this defect. BMW has developed a new and improved fuel pump in response to the fuel system problems.
