3%—or approximately 1,209—of 41,376 recalled Cadillac Lyriq vehicles have already experienced a critical display failure, according to General Motors.
A software defect may cause the SUV’s 33-inch screen to go blank while driving, potentially hiding key safety information such as the speedometer, warning lights, and rearview camera feed.
As a result, GM has issued a new 2025 Cadillac Lyriq Display Recall for certain 2023 and 2024 Lyriq models in the United States.
Recall Details:
- Models Affected: 2023 and 2024 Cadillac Lyriq
- Total Vehicles Recalled: 41,376
- Defect: A malfunction in the video display control module software may cause the screen to go blank while the vehicle is in use.
- Safety Risk: Loss of critical driving data increases the risk of accidents due to impaired visibility and awareness.
- Remedy: GM will provide a free software update, available either via OTA download or at Cadillac dealerships. Dealers were notified on May 29, 2025; owner notification letters will begin mailing around July 14, 2025.
Cadillac Lyriq owners are advised to verify whether their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering their VIN.

The Cadillac Lyriq Display Malfunctions and Its Risks
The display errors affecting the Cadillac Lyriq is a significant safety concern involving the vehicle’s digital dashboard and infotainment system.
At the center of the issue is the Virtual Cockpit Unit (VCU), which can intermittently fail and cause the screen to go completely blank while driving.
This screen is incredibly important for Cadillac drivers as it displays essential driving information that the driver relies on in real time.
When the system fails, drivers may lose access to key data such as vehicle speed, engine warning lights, tire pressure alerts, and the rearview camera feed.
Navigation functions and infotainment controls may also become inaccessible. The sudden loss of this information can impair situational awareness, delay recognition of mechanical issues, and increase the risk of collisions—particularly when reversing or maneuvering in traffic.
The root cause of the problem lies in outdated software within the display control module. Only vehicles that have not received the software update remain vulnerable to this issue.
Cadillac’s Response and the Recall Process
On March 4, 2025, General Motors launched a product investigation following a February 28 inquiry from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding customer complaints about malfunctioning driver displays.
After reviewing field data, GM identified 1,209 unique vehicle identification numbers (VINs) linked to potentially relevant incidents involving 2023 to 2025 model year Cadillac Lyriq vehicles.
Most of these cases were found in 2023 and 2024 models that had not received the latest software update for the display control module.
Reports of the issue began surfacing as early as August 23, 2022, and continued through April 3, 2025. While no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the malfunction, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority formally authorized a safety recall on May 22, 2025.
The recall affects 41,376 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles—3,318 from the 2023 model year and 38,058 from 2024—manufactured between March 2022 and September 2024. GM has filed the recall under NHTSA campaign number 25V356 and GM recall number N252500680.
To address the issue, GM will notify affected owners starting July 14, 2025. Notification letters will explain the nature of the defect, the associated risks, and how to obtain the necessary repair. The remedy is a free software update for the Virtual Cockpit Unit.
Owners will have the option of receiving the update over the air (if their vehicle is connected to digital services) or by visiting an authorized Cadillac dealership.
What Affected Cadillac Lyriq Owners Should Do
If you own a Cadillac Lyriq that may be impacted by the recent display recall, follow these steps to ensure your vehicle is properly addressed:
- Confirm Whether Your Vehicle Is Affected
Visit the NHTSA Recall Lookup Tool and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This will determine if your Lyriq is included in the recall campaign. - Arrange for the Required Software Update
If your vehicle is listed under the recall, you have two options for receiving the software fix:- Over-the-Air (OTA) Update: If your Lyriq is enrolled in Cadillac’s connected services, the update may be delivered automatically. Follow any instructions provided through the vehicle’s infotainment screen.
- In-Dealership Update: If OTA updates are not available or preferred, contact your local Cadillac dealership to schedule an appointment for a free software update. Be sure to reference Recall Number N252500680 when booking.
- Look for an Official Notification Letter
General Motors will begin mailing recall notices to affected owners starting July 14, 2025. The letter will include details about the issue, safety concerns, and how to complete the repair. - Contact Cadillac for Additional Support

When Recall Defects Become More Serious
Vehicle recalls become more serious when they affect safety-critical systems, compromise reliability, or violate federal safety standards.
In the case of the Cadillac Lyriq, the display malfunction illustrates how a defect can escalate beyond inconvenience and become a significant risk.
One major concern arises when essential safety systems are affected. Displays that go blank while driving can hide vital information such as speed, engine warnings, or alerts related to tire pressure and braking systems. This directly increases the likelihood of an accident.
Timing also matters. A defect that occurs while the vehicle is in motion poses a greater danger than one that appears while parked.
Unexpected failures can distract drivers, delay crucial responses, and reduce reaction times in high-pressure situations.
The situation becomes even more serious when the issue is intermittent or unpredictable. Malfunctions that come and go without warning can erode driver confidence and may not be diagnosed or repaired until a critical moment—potentially after a near miss or collision.
An increase in the number of reported incidents can also signal a more widespread problem. The 1,209 field cases reported in connection with the Lyriq display failure point to a systemic issue that cannot be dismissed as isolated. In some instances, the legal and regulatory implications can also heighten the urgency.
A defect that violates federal safety requirements—such as the mandate for a functioning rearview camera—can lead to NHTSA involvement, fines, or mandatory public warnings.
Finally, the seriousness of a defect increases when the remedy is delayed, limited in availability, or difficult for owners to access.
A software update may be a straightforward fix in theory, but if it is not delivered promptly to all affected vehicles, the safety risk remains unresolved.
If your Cadillac Lyriq has experienced repeated display failures, or if the issue remains unresolved despite a recall or repair attempts, you may have a valid claim under state Lemon Law protections.
These laws often provide remedies such as a vehicle buyback or replacement if a manufacturer cannot fix a safety-related defect within a reasonable number of attempts.
We highly recommend consulting with a lemon law attorney who can review your eligibility and next steps.
How Consulting a Lemon Law Attorney Can Help
The recent recall affecting over 41,000 Cadillac Lyriq SUVs underscores the serious risks posed by software malfunctions in key vehicle systems.
When the digital display goes blank, drivers may lose access to essential information like speed, warning indicators, and rearview camera visibility—features that are vital for safe operation.
If your 2023 or 2024 Cadillac Lyriq has experienced warranty repairs for screen failures or display malfunctions—even after receiving the recall repair—you may have legal options under your state’s lemon law.
These consumer protection laws may entitle you to a refund, vehicle replacement, or cash compensation if the defect remains unresolved after a reasonable number of repair attempts.
Since 2009, the Lemon Law Experts have helped thousands of vehicle owners pursue claims for persistent defects in new or leased vehicles.
