A California consumer purchased a brand-new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado in late 2023, only to face serious mechanical issues shortly after. The first warning sign came when the service engine light turned on and the truck stalled while in motion. The vehicle had to be restarted on the road and was immediately returned to a service center in Fontana, CA.

A thorough inspection revealed a major engine malfunction. During a road test, the truck stalled again. Technicians found excessive metal debris in the oil and determined that the engine had suffered severe internal damage, including spun bearings in two cylinders. Additional evidence of damage—including metal flakes in the oil filter—led GM’s technical support team to authorize an oil pan removal. Ultimately, the engine required a full replacement.

Along with the engine, contaminated components such as the oil cooler lines and radiator were also replaced. The A/C system was recharged, and a road test confirmed the vehicle was operational. All repairs were performed under GM’s warranty.

Months later, the vehicle was taken to another dealership for a non-critical issue involving a disconnected LED light on the passenger grille. The dealership quickly reconnected the light and performed a pre-alignment check, with no further concerns identified. This visit was completed at no cost to the owner.

Despite the warranty coverage, the extent of the initial failure—including a full engine replacement—and the prolonged service time exceeded 59 days. Under California’s lemon law, any vehicle that spends over 30 days in the shop for warranty-covered repairs may qualify for a buyback. With help from the Lemon Law Experts, GM agreed to repurchase the defective Silverado and compensate the client for legal fees.
