This consumer purchased a used 2018 Ram 3500 with high hopes for a dependable and robust vehicle. However, the truck soon revealed significant mechanical issues. Despite numerous repair attempts at a dealership in Escondido, CA, these problems persisted, leading to a legal challenge under the California Lemon Law.
The first signs of trouble appeared just a few months after purchase. With about 18,000 miles on the odometer, the vehicle was returned to the dealership for a malfunctioning DEF gauge. A software update to the ECM (Engine Control Module) was performed according to TSB 18-061-20.
Although the gauge seemed to work properly during testing, the underlying issue remained unresolved.
The truck exhibited hard engagement when shifting into drive or reverse. Attempts to address this by updating the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and performing a transmission relearn procedure did not resolve the problem, as no issues were detected during tests.
As time went on, these problems continued to escalate. Soon the vehicle was brought back to the dealership for hard shifting and an erratic factory alarm. Despite extensive testing, including a multipoint inspection and software checks, these issues could not be verified.
The vehicle appeared to operate normally during tests, leaving the owners without a clear resolution.
One of the most serious vehicle issues surfaced when the check engine light illuminated, and the vehicle became stuck in 4th gear with surging RPMs. Diagnosis revealed an internal transmission malfunction and a gear ratio error (P0734) in 4th gear.
This resulted in burnt transmission fluid and overheating, leading to major repairs, including the replacement of clutches, seals, the torque converter, and the valve body. Although the transmission was rebuilt and road-tested, the issues were not fully resolved.
Soon thereafter the truck experienced hard shifting when reversing and driving uphill. A software update to the PCM was applied according to Service Bulletin 18-080-22, which addressed shift quality concerns. No additional issues were detected during inspection by the dealership.
