Not long after purchasing a new 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, a consumer began experiencing problems with the interior ambient lighting system of their vehicle. The lights would remain on after the vehicle was turned off and locked, and the driver was unable to change the lighting colors or turn the feature off through the vehicle’s settings. These issues led to several service visits as technicians attempted to diagnose and correct the malfunction.

The first repair visit occurred with fewer than 3,000 miles on the vehicle. Technicians performed a software update related to the vehicle control unit and inspected the ambient lighting concern. Diagnostic testing was performed on the lighting system and its electrical connections. During the inspection, technicians disconnected the battery and reset the system, after which the lighting appeared to operate normally.

The vehicle returned after the same lighting problems continued. The driver again reported that the interior ambient lights stayed on and could not be adjusted. Technicians confirmed the concern and performed additional diagnostic testing on the vehicle’s lighting circuits and network communication systems. After consulting with technical support, the ambient lighting module was replaced.

No long after, the vehicle returned again with the same complaint. Technicians performed further electrical testing and monitored the vehicle’s communication network in an effort to identify the cause of the malfunction. At one point the system appeared to reset after a fuse associated with related modules was removed and reinstalled. However, the problem could not be consistently reproduced. The consumer was sent back with their vehicle, unsure whether the problem would return or if it had been fixed.

A couple months later, the vehicle returned once more for the same issue. Technicians monitored the vehicle’s electrical networks and attempted to duplicate the condition over an extended inspection period but were unable to reproduce the malfunction at that time. The driver was advised to continue monitoring the issue.

Despite repeated repair attempts and extensive diagnostic work, the ambient lighting malfunction continued to be a recurring concern during the vehicle’s early ownership. Because the problem persisted after multiple repair opportunities, the manufacturer ultimately repurchased the vehicle from the consumer under applicable lemon law protections.
