A 2024 Toyota Tacoma, purchased brand new from a dealership in Roseville, California, turned into a source of repeated mechanical frustration shortly after it was driven off the lot. The vehicle, which had only 7 miles on the odometer at the time of sale, began experiencing serious intermittent no-start issues within a short period. Despite multiple attempts at repair, the truck was repeatedly towed to Hanlees Toyota in Davis, where it underwent several rounds of diagnostic testing and warranty service.

The first major incident occurred around 13,631 miles, when the Tacoma powered on but would not crank. Technicians discovered the vehicle had likely entered an unexplained “theft mode”, which disabled the starter system. No error codes were present, and while aftermarket equipment was suspected of interfering with the truck’s electronics, no definitive source was identified at the time.

Shortly after this first incident, the Tacoma failed to start again—this time with a recorded parasitic electrical draw and CAN system communication issues. The technicians observed that a device plugged into the DLC3 port was preventing the system from entering sleep mode. Although temporary workarounds got the vehicle running again, the root cause remained unresolved.

The final straw came at 16,706 miles, when the truck experienced its third no-start failure, resulting in another tow and extended dealership stay. After escalating the issue to Toyota’s Field Technical Specialist (FTS), the problem was traced to interference in the left indoor smart key oscillator and a malfunctioning driver door latch, which caused the anti-theft system to block ignition. Replacing both components finally restored proper function.

After three separate failures to start, and over 20 cumulative days spent in the shop, the vehicle owner turned to the Lemon Law Experts for legal assistance. A California Lemon Law claim was filed against Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and the owner ultimately secured a lemon law buyback.
