Over 48,000 Dodge Hornets and Alfa Romeo Tonales Recalled for Rearview Camera

1%, or approximately 485 of the 48,494 recalled Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles are said to be affected by a defect that may prevent the rearview camera image from appearing when the vehicle is in reverse. This malfunction can severely compromise rear visibility, increasing the risk of a collision.

Affected drivers will begin receiving notification letters starting June 4, 2025, with recall-related repair work involving either a software update or, in some cases, replacement of the radio module, depending on the vehicle’s production date.

If you own one of the recalled models, you can contact Stellantis customer service or enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to see if your vehicle is affected.

Which Models Are Affected by the Rearview Camera Recall?

The rearview camera recall impacts select Dodge and Alfa Romeo SUVs manufactured in recent years. Specifically, it includes:

  • 2023–2025 Dodge Hornet: Approximately 40,372 units
  • 2023–2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale: Approximately 8,122 units

In affected vehicles, the rearview camera may fail to display an image while the car is in reverse, which significantly increases the risk of a collision.

What Causes the Backup Camera Issue?

The backup camera malfunction affecting 2023–2025 Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale SUVs stems from one of two potential issues: a software defect within the vehicle’s microprocessor or a cold soldering fault in the voltage regulator.

Either issue can prevent the rearview camera system from displaying an image while the vehicle is in reverse, resulting in a blank screen.

This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which requires rear visibility systems to display a rearview image during every backing maneuver.

Stellantis began investigating the issue on March 14, 2024. Over the following month, its European team analyzed warranty claims and field reports.

By mid-2024, engineers attempted to reproduce the issue, and by early 2025, they identified a software bug that could prevent the system from powering up. If the system fails to initialize, the camera feed remains inactive.

Additionally, internal documents point to a second possible cause: a manufacturing defect in the solder joint of the voltage regulator, which could disrupt power to the camera system.

The recall impacts approximately 40,732 Dodge Hornet units and 8,122 Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles in the U.S., although Stellantis estimates that only about 1% of the affected vehicles are likely to experience the problem.

How Will Chrysler Rectify This?

To address the rearview camera issue in affected 2023–2025 Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale SUVs, Chrysler—under Stellantis—will implement one of two remedies, depending on the vehicle’s production date.

  • For vehicles built on or before December 6, 2023, dealers will replace the radio module with an updated version featuring a redesigned printed circuit board. A software update will also be applied to ensure proper functionality.
  • For vehicles manufactured after December 6, 2023, only a software update will be required, as these vehicles are already equipped with the revised hardware.

Repairs will be performed free of charge. Stellantis expects to begin implementing these fixes in the current quarter.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning June 4, 2025. The recall is identified under Stellantis recall numbers 13C and 38C, and the NHTSA campaign number is 25V-246.

Additionally, Stellantis submitted a General Reimbursement Plan to the NHTSA in October 2024. Under this plan, owners who paid out of pocket for eligible repairs prior to the official recall may be reimbursed.

Vehicle owners with questions or concerns can contact Stellantis customer service or visit the NHTSA website for more information and to check their vehicle’s recall status.

Lemon Law Solutions for Your Defective Vehicle

If you’re dealing with repeat issues related to the rearview camera defect in your 2023–2025 Dodge Hornet or Alfa Romeo Tonale, lemon laws may offer you valuable solutions. Here’s how you can best approach this process:

  1. Document Everything: Keep comprehensive records of all repair attempts, including dates, issues, and any correspondence with the dealership or manufacturer. This documentation is crucial if you need to pursue a lemon law claim.
  2. Understand Your State’s Lemon Laws: Lemon laws differ by state, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the specific regulations in your area. These laws generally cover vehicles with significant defects that affect their safety, use, or value—such as the rearview camera issue in the affected Dodge and Alfa Romeo models.
  3. Notify the Manufacturer: You are required to give the manufacturer a reasonable number of attempts to repair the defect. This is typically defined by state law, often around three to four repair attempts for the same issue. If your vehicle has been affected by the rearview camera problem, ensure you give Stellantis an opportunity to correct the issue.
  4. Seek Legal Assistance: If the rearview camera defect persists despite multiple repair attempts, it may be time to consult with an attorney who specializes in lemon law claims. A lemon law attorney can help guide you through the process and ensure your rights are upheld.
  5. File a Claim: If the manufacturer fails to fix the defect after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle or a refund. This is a key provision under most state lemon laws.
  6. Federal Protection: In addition to state lemon laws, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act offers federal protection, ensuring that warranties are honored and providing recourse if they are not.

If you believe your Dodge Hornet or Alfa Romeo Tonale is affected by the recall and you’re facing ongoing issues with the rearview camera system, you may be entitled to compensation for damages and repair costs.

Below is an approximate range of potential settlements for Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale models impacted by this recall:

Affected VehicleAverage Lemon Law Settlement
Dodge Hornet$70,676
Alfa Romeo Tonale$82,519
