What Causes the Fuel Injector Defect?

Ford has not released specific details about what causes the fuel injector to fail, but the Safety Recall Report discusses that the fuel injector can crack during use, unintentionally allowing for fuel or fuel vapor to escape and end up in places where it could start a fire.

Passengers in a vehicle with the defect might notice the smell of fuel in the cabin, which is the vapor escaping through the cracked fuel injector.

If there is a fire, it will likely occur under the hood, and smoke would likely be visible. Even in cases where no fire occurs, the presence of fuel vapors inside the vehicle poses a serious health and safety risk.

Drivers experiencing this issue should immediately seek a professional inspection and avoid operating the vehicle until it has been evaluated.

Which Ford Models and Years Are Included?

Two different models spanning a number of years are potentially impacted by this recall. The first are 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles, and the second are 2020-2022 Ford Escape vehicles.

Of the total 694,271 recalled vehicles, the Ford Bronco Sport vehicles make up 339,044 while the Ford Escape makes up the remaining 355,227.

As previously mentioned, Ford estimates that 0.3%, or about 20,828, vehicles actually contain the defect.

Ford says that all impacted vehicles are equipped with 1.5L engines and that the vehicles were not produced in VIN order, which means owners of potentially impacted vehicles should contact Ford if they are concerned that their vehicle needs to be repaired, either by calling Ford or by visiting an authorized Ford dealer.

Has Ford Previously Released Any Related Recalls?

Yes, this is an expansion of three previous recalls, whose National Highway Traffic Safety Administration numbers are 22V859000, 24V187000, and 25V165000.

Those previous recalls were for the same issue: cracked fuel injectors allowing for fuel and vapor to escape and end up near hot areas, increasing the risk of a fire.

Like the most recent recall, these previous recalls also impacted Ford Escape and Ford Bronco vehicles but only included vehicles up to 2023; this most recent recall also includes vehicles from 2024.

Ford’s Repair Plan and Owner Notification Timeline

Assuming Ford is following the schedule set out in the Safety Recall Report, dealer notifications of the recall were sent out on July 15, 2025, and owners will begin receiving notification letters beginning August 18, 2025.

Ford describes those letters as “interim owner notification letters” with “interim remedy guidance,” which Ford says is because they have not found a permanent remedy for the issue yet.

That means whatever interim remedy Ford has might not work as a permanent solution, and your vehicle might continue to have problems or be unsafe to drive even after repair attempts are made.

In that case, your best option may be to begin the lemon law claim process against Ford for selling you a defective vehicle that does not respond to repairs.

What to Do If Issues Continue After Repair

If you are experiencing issues with your Ford and it has been subject to repeat warranty repair attempts for problems that affect vehicle safety, use or value, you might be dealing with a lemon.

Many consumers don’t realize that legal protections exist when a vehicle under the original manufacturer’s warranty has been subject to multiple repair attempts.

Problems like fuel system defects, engine trouble, or electrical malfunctions can make a car unsafe to drive, and no one should be stuck with a vehicle they can’t rely on.

Lemon law attorneys are experienced in navigating these situations and can help determine whether your vehicle qualifies under state or federal lemon laws, and hiring such an attorney often makes the claim process run much more smoothly.

The process usually begins with reviewing your repair history and any written communication you’ve had with the dealership or manufacturer.

From there, your attorney will guide you through the next steps—whether that involves notifying the automaker, negotiating a settlement, or filing a formal claim. In many cases, you may be eligible for a full vehicle repurchase, a replacement car, or cash compensation.

Importantly, lemon law claims are typically handled at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Most laws require the manufacturer to pay your legal fees and costs if your case is successful.

That means you can pursue a claim without taking on financial risk, and with the help of someone who understands the legal system inside and out.

If you’ve had enough of dealing with the same defect over and over, consulting with a qualified lemon law attorney can be the first step toward getting the resolution—and the vehicle—you deserve. See the chart below for some examples of what you could receive.

Affected VehicleAverage PriceAverage Settlement
Ford Bronco Sport$29,560$51,730
Ford Escape$22,500$39,375
