Recent communications between the U.S. Department of Transportation and Ford Motor Company reveal that Ford will be issuing a recall for their 2024-2025 Ford Mustang based on the discovery of a potential water leak issue.
This recall is estimated to impact about 1,000 vehicles, although up to 105,441 could theoretically contain the defect.
In this article, we discuss this upcoming recall and give you all the information you need to be on top of it and know what to do as it progresses.
We also discuss the lemon law process as an additional step after a recall, if the recall remedy fails to solve the problem.

Why Is Ford Recalling 2024-2025 Mustangs?
After beginning investigations in April 2025, Ford eventually discovered that water could leak into the vehicle’s body structure and eventually make its way to the body control module, which controls things like exterior vehicle lighting.
If water seeps into the body and onto that module, it can result in those exterior lighting components, like headlights, taillights, and indicators, to lose connection with the vehicle’s main electrical system.
This means those lights will not function as well as they otherwise would or fail to function at all.
Nonfunctioning exterior lights can be dangerous, since drivers rely on those lights to see the road ahead of them and indicate to other drivers whether they are braking or turning (or neither).

Has Ford Issued Similar Lighting or Water-Intrusion Recalls Before?
Yes, on at least one other occasion Ford issued a recall for a lighting-related issue that was impacting 2025 Ford Mustang, 2025 Mustang Mach E, and 2025 Lincoln Nautilus vehicles.
This recall concerned the LED driver modules in those vehicles, which could contain a burnt diode that could fail to produce light.
In the Nautilus specifically, this impacted both the headlights and the taillights of the vehicle. This recall was announced in August 2025 and potentially impacts 21,765 vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recall Campaign Number for this recall is 25V519000.
What Ford’s Fix Involves and When Repairs Will Begin
Ford plans to send out interim notification letters to vehicle owners starting September 1, 2025, and ending September 5, 2025.
Remedy notification letters, which will include information on where to take the impacted vehicle, are expected to be mailed out starting January 2026 and should be finished by the end of March 2026.
VINs for impacted vehicles should be searchable now and have been since August 25, 2025.
Once owners are notified, they will likely be instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer, where technicians will replace the faulty sealing causing the problem and replace the body control module if it has been water damaged.
This remedy comes at no cost to the consumer, as recall remedies ordinarily do.
How to Check If Your Mustang Is Included in the Recall
According to Ford, the best way to check if your Mustang is included in this recall is to take it to a dealership and have technicians there use the Ford Online Automotive Service Information System to get specific information regarding your vehicle.
Consumers can also call Ford’s toll-free line for more information, which is (1-866-436-7332).
Could This Recall Qualify for a Lemon Law Claim?
Depending on how the repairs for your vehicle go, you might be eligible for a lemon law claim. If your vehicle has already been experiencing persistent issues with its exterior lighting and repeat warranty repairs for this or a similar issue, you may be well on your way to satisfying the lemon law claim requirements.
When a vehicle develops serious or recurring problems, the lemon law gives consumers a way to seek relief from the manufacturer.
The process usually starts when the car experiences a defect that affects its safety, value, or overall use.
The law requires the manufacturer or its authorized dealer to be given a fair number of attempts to repair the problem, and this may mean multiple visits to the repair shop or the vehicle being out of service for an extended period.
During this time, it is crucial for the owner to keep detailed records, including work orders, invoices, and notes about conversations with the dealership, since these documents are often the foundation of a successful claim.
If the issue continues despite repeated repair efforts, the consumer can then notify the manufacturer that the vehicle qualifies as a potential lemon.
Many states require this notice to be in writing, and some even mandate a final repair attempt after the manufacturer receives it. At this stage, the manufacturer may propose arbitration as a step before any legal action.
If arbitration fails or is not required, the next step is often pursuing a formal lemon law claim. Depending on the circumstances, the consumer may be entitled to a replacement vehicle, a full refund of the purchase or lease price, or reimbursement for related expenses such as rental cars, towing, and repair costs.
In many cases, the manufacturer is also responsible for covering reasonable attorney’s fees, making it easier for consumers to seek legal help without worrying about the financial burden.
Because each state has its own rules and timelines for how a lemon law claim must be handled, it is important to understand the specific requirements where the vehicle was purchased or leased.
Working with a knowledgeable lemon law attorney can ensure the process is followed correctly and that the consumer’s rights are fully protected.
Ultimately, the lemon law process is designed to balance the scales by holding manufacturers accountable and helping vehicle owners escape the frustration of owning a defective car.
