Hyundai has issued a recall affecting over 54,600 vehicles, including the Elantra N, Kona N, and Veloster N models, along with the G70 sedans from its luxury brand Genesis.
The 2024 Hyundai Fuel Pump Recall addresses a potential issue with the fuel pump, which could fail and result in a loss of drive power.
As of the filing date, Hyundai has documented 2,460 related incidents reported between May 10, 2019, and June 17, 2024, in the U.S. market.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of crashes, fires, or injuries in the U.S. or Canada. If you own a Hyundai or Genesis vehicle that has been repeatedly repaired for fuel pump trouble, you could qualify for legal compensation:
Affected Vehicle | Average Lemon Law Settlement |
Hyundai Veloster N | $50,765 |
Genesis G70 | $73,458 |
Hyundai Elantra N | $57,576 |
Hyundai Kona N | $60,507 |

Cause of the Hyundai Fuel Pump Problem
The problem with the Hyundai fuel pump in the affected vehicles is linked to the fuel control valve (FCV) within the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) assemblies.
Over time, the FCV plunger may wear down, allowing too much fuel to enter the pump. This can cause the air/fuel mixture to become too “rich,” which may lead to a reduction or complete loss of power at low speeds, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Affected Vehicles
The affected vehicles include:
- Hyundai Veloster N (2019-2021)
- Genesis G70 (2019-2023)
- Hyundai Elantra N (2022-2023)
- Hyundai Kona N (2022-2023)
In these models, the fuel control valve within the high-pressure fuel pump may wear down over time, allowing too much fuel to enter the pump.
This problem can lead to a loss or reduction of drive power at low speeds, heightening the risk of a crash.
The Dangers of a Defective Fuel Pump
Driving with a defective fuel pump is considered unsafe due to several potential hazards:
- Unexpected Power Drops: A defective fuel pump can lead to sudden losses of power, which can be particularly dangerous during maneuvers like overtaking or merging onto highways.
- Vehicle Shutdown: The fuel pump may fail completely without warning, causing the vehicle to shut down while in motion, increasing the risk of an accident.
- Engine Damage: Inconsistent fuel supply can cause the engine to run lean (too much air and not enough fuel), which can lead to overheating and serious engine damage.
- Loss of Vehicle Control: If the engine shuts down due to a fuel pump failure, you could lose power steering and brakes, making it difficult to control the vehicle.
If you suspect your fuel pump is failing, you should have it inspected and repaired by a professional as soon as possible.
Hyundai’s Fuel Pump Fix
Starting on September 9, owners of the affected vehicles will receive a first-class mail notification instructing them to bring their cars in for recall repair work.
Hyundai dealers will update the engine control module software and, if necessary, inspect and replace the fuel pump at no cost to the vehicle owners.
If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is on, the high-pressure fuel pump will also be replaced. This remedy will be provided free of charge for all affected vehicles, even if they are no longer under the Hyundai New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Hyundai will also reimburse owners for out-of-pocket expenses related to this issue, following the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 22, 2024.
In the meantime, owners with questions can contact Hyundai at 855-371-9460 (recall numbers 262 and 023G), call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit the NHTSA website to check their vehicle identification number for more information.
Other Legal Remedies for Repeat Vehicle Issues
If you are a Hyundai or Genesis driver experiencing fuel pump issues or other persistent problems, you might be eligible to file a lemon law claim.
This law protects consumers who have bought or leased vehicles that have undergone repeated repairs for the same or similar issue during the warranty period.
The Lemon Law typically applies if your vehicle has a defect that affects its safety, value, or utility and has been subject to multiple repair attempts by the manufacturer or an authorized dealership during the warranty period.
If your vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more days due to repairs, it may also qualify.
Each Lemon Law case is unique and dependent on a range of different factors, so, seeking legal advice is recommended to accurately assess your situation.
To pursue a claim, keep detailed records of all repair attempts and communications, and consider consulting with a legal professional.
Potential outcomes of a successful claim may include receiving a replacement vehicle, a refund, or cash compensation.
