What Causes the Hyundai Backup Camera Problem?

The primary cause of the Hyundai backup camera issue lies in faulty solder joints on the camera’s circuit board.

Over time, these solder joints can crack, leading to a loss of connection and causing the camera to malfunction.

This failure prevents the rearview camera image from appearing on the infotainment screen while reversing, which significantly reduces rearward visibility and increases the risk of accidents.

Hyundai estimates that 5% of the affected vehicles are impacted by this defect, which was first identified in 2022.

In response, the manufacturer began installing new rearview camera assemblies in 2022 that do not feature this defect.

Which Vehicles Are Included in the Recall?

This recall affects several Hyundai models from the 2021 and 2022 model years. Specifically, the following vehicles are included:

    • 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Elantra sedans
    • 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs
    • 2022 Hyundai Elantra N sedans
    • 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid SUVs

Over time, the solder joints on this vehicle’s camera can crack, causing the camera to fail and resulting in a loss of rear visibility.

How Will Hyundai Resolve the Backup Camera Issue?

Hyundai will address the backup camera problem by replacing the faulty camera assemblies in the affected vehicles.

The defective cameras, with cracked solder joints, will be swapped out for new rearview camera assemblies that do not contain this flaw.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting January 19, 2025. The camera replacement will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

If you own one of the affected Hyundai vehicles, here are the steps you should take,

    1. Check for Recall Notification

Hyundai will begin mailing recall notifications to affected vehicle owners starting January 19, 2025. If you haven’t received a notification by that time, you can check your vehicle’s recall status by visiting the NHTSA recall website or contacting Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460.

    • Schedule a Repair Appointment

Once you confirm your vehicle is part of the recall, schedule an appointment with an authorized Hyundai dealership. The dealership will replace the faulty backup camera assembly at no charge.

    • Document Everything

Keep detailed records of all communications with Hyundai and the dealership, including repair orders, receipts, and any correspondence. This documentation is important if you need to pursue further action under the lemon law.

    • Understand Your Lemon Law Rights

If your vehicle has been in for repairs multiple times for the same issue or has been out of service for an extended period, you may qualify for relief under your state’s lemon law. While lemon laws vary by state, they typically provide a replacement vehicle or a refund if the manufacturer cannot fix a substantial defect within a reasonable number of attempts.

    • Contact a Lemon Law Attorney

If you believe your vehicle qualifies as a lemon, consider consulting a lemon law attorney. They can guide you through the process and help you understand your rights. Many lemon law attorneys offer free consultations and work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if you win your case.

    • File a Complaint with NHTSA

If you experience any issues with the recall process or feel Hyundai is not adequately addressing the problem, you can file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Filing a complaint helps ensure safety concerns are properly addressed and may prompt further action if needed. By following these steps, you can ensure your vehicle is repaired promptly and that you are fully aware of your rights under the lemon law.
