If you drive a recent Hyundai and have noticed your engine misfiring, stalling, or losing power out of nowhere, you’re not alone—and you might be part of a growing legal battle.
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Hyundai, claiming that certain 2021–2023 models suffer from defective fuel injectors that can cause serious performance and safety issues.
While the automaker has issued a technical service bulletin, many owners say it’s too little, too late. If you have noticed issues with your Hyundai, you might be able to join the ongoing class action lawsuit.
Otherwise, if your vehicle has been experiencing a persistent defect that repairs do not fix, you may have a lemon law claim and could receive compensation for your defective car.

Hyundai Fuel Injector Lawsuit: What Drivers Need to Know
Currently, there is no ongoing class action lawsuit against Hyundai. However, several law firms are investigating the claims made by Hyundai owners to see if there is a basis for a claim.
Owners of affected Hyundai models, described below, equipped with 2.5L GDI, non-turbo, engines are in the potential class of plaintiffs.
Those engines allegedly contain faulty fuel injectors, which can be prone to internal leaking and allow fuel to seep into the engine when it should not.
This can cause the engine to misfire, run roughly, lose power, or even stall entirely—sometimes while driving.
In some cases, drivers have reported sudden surges in acceleration or a strong fuel odor inside the cabin.
This defect can occur without warning, and even when dashboard warning lights go on, it can be too late, and the injector may have already done damage.

Which Hyundai Models Are Affected by Fuel Injector Problems?
The following Hyundai models are affected by these problems:
| Make and Model | Year |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | 2021–2023 |
| Hyundai Sonata | 2021–2023 |
| Hyundai Tucson | 2021–2023 |
| Hyundai Santa Cruz | 2021–2023 |
Has Hyundai Released a Recall or a Technical Service Bulletin?
In June 2023, Hyundai released a technical service bulletin describing how to address these fuel injector issues.
That technical service bulletin was sent to dealerships so they can repair vehicles coming in with these problems.
However, sending out that bulletin might come back to haunt Hyundai, as Hyundai owners are now alleging that the bulletin reveals Hyundai knew about the issue but did not address it.
The continued problems with the fuel injector, even after repairs, are making consumers believe the problem is deeper than a simple repair can address.
That is why class action investigations are ongoing. Consumers are reporting paying upwards of $800 for the repairs, and frustrations are building as more and more reports of problems come in.
Legal Options for Affected Hyundai Owners
If you believe your Hyundai is impacted by these fuel injector issues, you have a few legal options.
- Stay Up-to-Date on Legal News: Blogs like this one and other legal news platforms, especially those focused on class action lawsuits, are a helpful resource to stay on top of the most current information. Staying aware means you can join any class action lawsuit as soon as it starts, getting you on the path to compensation quicker.
- File a Complaint with the NHTSA: The NHTSA, or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, takes complaints from consumers who experience issues with their vehicles. These complaints help inform manufacturers of the issues with their vehicles, potentially resulting in a recall.
- Join a Class Action Lawsuit if One Starts: Class action lawsuits are a strong legal avenue for many plaintiffs to seek relief together. Those plaintiffs will all be represented by the same attorney, but a “lead plaintiff” will be selected to represent the class as a whole. Class action lawsuits and their benefits are described in more detail below.
- File a, Individual Lemon Law Claim Against the Manufacturer: A consumer might choose to file a lemon law claim against the manufacturer. A lemon law claim asserts that a vehicle is a lemon because it has been subject to repeat repairs that substantially impair its safety, use or vale. Lemon law claims and the benefits of filing one are described in more detail below.
Benefits of Joining a Class Action Lawsuit
Joining a class action lawsuit, where one exists, can be a smart move for vehicle owners dealing with widespread defects like Hyundai’s fuel injector issue.
Rather than going through the legal process alone, individuals become part of a larger group of consumers facing the same problem, which can increase pressure on the manufacturer to settle or correct the issue.
This group approach often reduces the financial burden on each participant, since legal costs are typically shared or covered by contingency agreements.
In many cases, affected owners can receive compensation or reimbursement for repairs without the need to appear in court or actively participate beyond basic documentation.
However, compensation can be lower per plaintiff, since any award is split between the class.
Benefits of Filing an Individual Lemon Law Claim
Filing a lemon law claim gives vehicle owners a direct path to getting compensation when their car has a defect that keeps coming back, even after repeat warranty repair attempts.
Unlike a class action, a lemon law case is handled individually, which can often result in faster resolution and potentially greater compensation—such as a full refund, vehicle replacement, or cash settlement.
It also puts the legal pressure on the manufacturer to make things right under warranty obligations. With the help of a lemon law attorney, many consumers are able to go through the process with little or no out-of-pocket costs, since most laws require the manufacturer to pay legal fees if the consumer wins.
For people frustrated by repeated trips to the dealership and an unreliable vehicle, a lemon law claim can be a powerful and efficient way to move forward.
