First sold by Nissan’s luxury division in 2016, the Infiniti QX50 is a subcompact crossover SUV offering promising features and a comfy interior. The QX50 faces steep competition from similar vehicle models produced by Audi, Mercedes Benz, and Lincoln. The Infiniti SUV often ranks behind its competitors and there are several reasons as to why. For a luxury vehicle, manufacturing defects appear in the Infiniti QX50 far too often. The 2019 Infiniti QX50 is especially known for a host of electrical, propulsion, and service brake issues.

2019 Infiniti QX50 Problems

Like other Infiniti vehicles, there are major problems involving the service brakes in the 2019 QX50. The vehicle’s emergency braking system will activate suddenly, despite there being no objects near the vehicle. Overall, issues with Nissan’s Forward Emergency Braking system (FEB) are extremely common among a range of both Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The sensors that detect pedestrians, vehicles, or objects near the vehicle appear to be malfunctional. In affected vehicles, these sensors falsely detect obstacles that are not present. This defect appears regularly in 2019 model year Infiniti and Nissan vehicles.

Other QX50 models appear to have defects in their fuel and propulsion systems. In formal complaints about the vehicle, drivers report excessive oil consumption in affected QX50 models. They say that defective QX50 vehicles can have a gas mileage that is much lower than the advertised 24-31 MPG. Other drivers report strong odors in their vehicles despite finding no leaks or other visible issues.

Electrical system defects are common in the 2019 Infiniti QX50. Drivers of affected vehicles say that their dashboard screens and rear-view camera display often go blank. Additionally, some Infiniti consumers report rather odd electrical system symptoms. Multiple complaints about the 2019 Infiniti QX50 mention that even when the vehicle is turned off, some components of the electrical system may continue to function- such as the radio, dashboard display, or lights. Moreover, customers have also reported issues with the key fob, doors, and navigation system in their vehicles.

Infiniti Warning Lights and Airbags

Several Infiniti drivers report seeing numerous warning lights such as an Infiniti BCI malfunction, Check Engine, or Check Airbag light.  Illuminated warning lights in Infiniti vehicles can be dangerous for the driver and any passengers as some of these warning messages can indicate that important vehicle functions- such as the airbag system- are completely disabled.

Of Infiniti drivers who have been in auto accidents due to lemon issues in their vehicles, several have reported that the airbags failed to deploy during the collision. These drivers say that the “Check Airbag” warning light appeared on their vehicle’s dashboard prior to the accidents.

In a complaint filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one QX50 driver states that their daughter ended up in a minor accident while driving their QX50. The vehicle came to a sudden stop, despite no objects in front of or to the rear of the vehicle. Prior to the accident, a series of warning messages appeared on the dashboard, including a “check airbag” light. Subsequently, the airbags did not deploy during the incident. This same issue has been found in a range of both Nissan and Infiniti vehicles produced in 2019.

Infiniti QX50 ReviewWhat Consumers Say

Several Infiniti QX50 have made formal reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the troubles they have experienced in their vehicles. Concerns about the vehicle’s electrical, braking, and fuel systems were common. Most of the complaints about the Infiniti QX50 on NHTSA’s website concern the 2019 model year.

“My Infiniti QX50 FWD has been wasting a lot of fuel compared to what is/was advertised on the window sticker. I leased the vehicle expecting the gas mileage to be somewhere between 24 and 31 MPGs, but in reality I have been experiencing 17-20 MPG.”

“My wife opened the rear liftgate using the outside electronic door switch on the liftgate. The liftgate electrically fully opened. My wife started to load items into the rear of the SUV. The door electrically closed on its own. The door struck the back of my wife’s head before she could get out of the way.”

“In October, I drove the Infiniti to the gym in the morning 5:20AM. .. When I got in the car and started it, the fan came on. It was so loud that we could hear it inside the car with all windows up… Got to work, shut off the engine, restarted the car, [then the] fan immediately came back on.”

“My car just displayed red and white flashing indicators on the dash and automatically screeched to a halt, completely out of my control, in the middle of a busy intersection. Because the road was damp from rain, my car actually skidded. I was not going to hit anything, there was no car or object in front of me. I was driving about 30MPH. This has happened repeatedly in parking garages and other low-light scenarios… At this point I am terrified to drive the car.”
