Luxury electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid has been making waves in the automotive industry with its innovative Air sedans. However, the company has recently faced a series of setbacks due to several recalls of its 2022 Air sedans. In fact, Lucid has had to issue recalls on three separate occasions in 2022, which has resulted in a massive recall of all versions of the 2022 Air.

These vehicles have been praised for their luxurious features, cutting-edge technology, and impressive driving range, making them a serious contender in the EV market. However, these recent recalls have raised questions about the quality control and safety standards of Lucid’s vehicles.

As a Lucid consumer or potential customer, these recent recalls may have you questioning the safety and reliability of the Air sedan. It’s understandable to be concerned, especially if you have invested a significant amount of money into a luxury electric vehicle.

Although the EV startup has assured its customers that it is taking steps to address these issues and ensure their satisfaction, it’s worth considering your options if you’ve experienced severe car trouble or financial losses due to these 2022 Air recalls:

  • February 16, 2022 NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V090000 “Snap Ring on Front Strut Damper May Fail”
  • May 18, 2022 NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V351000 “Disabled Display Screens/FMVSS 101”
  • September 29, 2022 NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V27000 “Front Tow Eye Brack May Detach During Towing”

Pursuing a lemon law case may be a viable option for those who have been negatively impacted by the lucid air recalls. Lemon law cases are individual legal claims brought against the manufacturer of a defective vehicle.

If your case is successful, you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle or a refund. This can be a faster and more direct way to resolve your issue, as it doesn’t require the collective effort of a group of people.

    Overview: Lucid Motors Recall

According to an announcement from NHTSA in February 2022, Lucid recalled 2022 Air vehicles due to unsecured wires that may result in the car’s displays working intermittently or failing altogether. This presents a safety hazard as the Air’s displays are responsible for providing crucial information such as speed, range, and warning indicators.

A few months later in September, Lucid recalled 571 Air sedan vehicles to repair a bracket on affected vehicles that could detach while the vehicle is being towed. This would be the third Lucid Motors recall in 2022. The first in February was for a suspension issue that affected 203 units. The second recall in May impacted 1,117 units.

While Lucid is a relatively new company and hasn’t yet delivered many vehicles, it is worth noting that through the second quarter of 2022, they delivered a total of 1,039 vehicles. On August 3, the company reported second-quarter deliveries of 679 vehicles and revised their full-year delivery guidance downwards to a range of 6,000 to 7,000 vehicles, down from their previous estimate of 12,000 to 14,000 vehicles.

What causes the instrument panel issues?

NHTSA explains that the issue lies in a loose wiring harness that can come into contact with the steering shaft. This can result in damage to the wiring harness that can cause inadequate electrical current to flow through the instrument panel. This can affect the vehicle’s screen display and cause the dash screen to fail intermittingly or altogether.

Is there a fix for the 2023 Lucid Air Recall?

Lucid announced the following remedies for customers for its 2022 Air recalls:

    • February 2022 recall: Lucid announced that it will inspect and replace the front strut dampers in affected vehicles, if necessary.
    • May 2022 recall: Lucid stated that it would inspect and secure the wiring harness in affected vehicles, if necessary.
    • September 2022 recall: Lucid stated that it would inspect the subframe of affected vehicles and add rivets to the tow eye bracket as needed.

The automaker is obligated under law to offer recall-related repairs free of charge to its customers.

What makes/models are affected by the Lucid electric car recall?

Lucid has recalled all versions of its 2022 Air sedan, affecting 1,117 vehicles built before May 4, 2022.

What Lemon Law Remedies are Available

The California Lemon Law covers new and used vehicles that were purchased or leased in California. If you find yourself repeatedly repairing your Lucid vehicle for the same or similar issue during the warranty, your vehicle might be a lemon.  If it is a lemon, the manufacturer has an obligation to either refund or replace the vehicle.

A lemon law refund consists of returning all the monies you spent towards your vehicle including the down payment, monthly payments (minus a usage fee for when you drove the vehicle without any issues), and the payment of any outstanding loan balance or remaining lease payments.

A lemon law replacement consists of a collateral exchange of the lemon vehicle for one that is substantially similar.  With this remedy, the consumer will be liable for the usage fee and any difference in price for the exchanged vehicle.

With both the refund and replacement remedies, the auto manufacturer is responsible to pay for the consumer’s reasonable attorneys fees and costs.  This makes pursuing a lemon law claim an easy and right decision as you will not come out of pocket for any of your legal fees or costs.

    What can I do?

When it comes to car troubles with Lucid’s EV vehicles, deciding to individually pursue a lemon law case may be the right answer. Individual legal claims for a replacement car or a refund against the auto manufacturer of for vehicle that is repeatedly repaired during the warranty are known as “lemon law” cases.

Although there isn’t already a class action lawsuit involving the 2022 Air, given the volume of recalls and affected vehicles, there is a significant chance that one will be filed in the future.  If this happens, it might be a better option to opt out of any class action settlement and pursue an individual lemon law claim so that you can get remedies specific to your individual facts and case.

Prior to making a decision to pursue a lemon law claim, it’s important to take all relevant factors into account, such as the strengths of your particular claim, the resources required to take legal action, and the probability of a favorable result. If you’re considering filing an individual claim, consulting with an expert lemon law lawyer can help you understand your options and choose the best course of action.
