Mercedes S580 and Maybach S580’s Recalled for Engine Stalling Issue

100% of the 27,000 Mercedes S580 and Maybach S580 vehicles are being recalled due to a defect that causes the engine to stall, creating a serious safety risk.

Owners are urged to contact their local dealerships to arrange for necessary repairs and further instructions.

The 2024 Engine Stalling Recall issued by Mercedes-Benz, was initiated after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that the stalling issue could occur while driving.

If your Mercedes-Benz has experienced repeated engine problems, you may be entitled to compensation or a refund under California’s Lemon Law.

What Causes the Mercedes S580 Stalling Issue?

The stalling issue in the Mercedes S580 and Maybach S580 is largely due to a malfunction in the engine control unit (ECU) software.

Errors in the ECU’s programming disrupt the CAMTRONIC variable valve lift adjustment system, which can lead to engine stalling while driving.

This problem arises under certain conditions. Mercedes-Benz has stated that if a downshift from 7th to 6th gear doesn’t complete properly during light braking, and if other factors like low transmission oil temperature, an aborted gear shift, or recuperation by the 48V starter-alternator are present, the engine may stall.

This creates a dangerous situation, as stalling often happens without warning, particularly in traffic.

Mercedes initiated an investigation in March 2022 following reports of stalling in GLE/GLS models. While initial findings pointed to abnormalities during automatic downshifting, no clear connection was made between the gear-shifting issue and engine stalls.

However, in May 2023, Mercedes was able to replicate the stalling issue on a test vehicle, confirming that the problem affects specific GLE/GLS models with certain 6-cylinder engines and 9-speed automatic transmissions.

By February 2024, Mercedes had received 261 field reports and 730 warranty claims related to this stalling issue, dating back to December 2019.

Which Mercedes Benz Vehicles Are Included?

The 2024 recall for engine stalling affects the following Mercedes-Benz models:

  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580
  • 2021-2023 Mercedes-Maybach S 580

These vehicles are being recalled due to a defect in the engine control unit (ECU) software, which may lead to engine stalling or overheating under specific conditions.

If you own one of these models, make sure to contact your dealership to schedule the required software updates and repairs.

How Will Mercedes Fix the Stalling Problem?

Mercedes-Benz plans to resolve the stalling issue in the S580 and Maybach S580 by updating the engine control unit (ECU) software to fix the programming errors responsible for the malfunction.

Additionally, they will inspect the CAMTRONIC variable valve lift adjustment system, replacing any faulty components if necessary. These repairs will be carried out at no cost to affected vehicle owners.

How Should I Proceed if My Mercedes Is Affected?

If your Mercedes is included in the recall, follow these steps to ensure the issue is addressed:

  1. Check Your VIN: Verify if your vehicle is part of the recall by checking your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Mercedes-Benz recall website or by contacting your local dealership.
  2. Contact Your Dealership: Reach out to your nearest Mercedes-Benz dealership to schedule an appointment. Provide them with your VIN and mention the recall.
  3. Follow Instructions: The dealership will inform you of the next steps, which typically involve bringing your vehicle in for inspection, software updates, or any necessary repairs.
  4. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on any updates or communications from Mercedes-Benz regarding the recall, as they may provide further instructions.
  5. Drive Safely: Until your vehicle is repaired, exercise caution while driving and stay alert for any unusual engine behavior.
