Most modern vehicles are equipped with navigation systems that greatly enhance the driving experience and help drivers get from point A to point B safely and efficiently.
Unfortunately, though, no system is perfect, and navigation systems can experience a number of frustrating and even unsafe problems.
In this blog post, we discuss some of the most commonly reported problems with Nissan navigation systems and how you can address them.
Generally, these issues happen because software is malfunctioning or needs to be updated.
Staying up to date on these issues can help ensure your Nissan operates as smoothly as possible throughout its lifespan; continue reading to find out more!
Having Vehicle Problems?
Submit the form below to see if your vehicle qualifies for a lemon law claim.
Problem #1: Touchscreen Freezes or Stops Responding
- What the Problem Is: The navigation screen may become unresponsive, freeze while calculating a route, or go blank altogether.
- Potential Causes: Outdated navigation software, corrupted firmware files, or low system memory can disrupt screen responsiveness.
- Symptoms: The screen may lag, fail to register taps, freeze during use, or display a blank map. Occasionally, it may restart and show the Nissan logo before resuming.
- Potential Fix: Restart the system by turning off the vehicle and restarting. Perform a software update via Wi-Fi or USB. As a last resort, a dealership reset or module replacement may be needed.
Problem #2: Inaccurate GPS Positioning or Lost Signal
- What the Problem Is: The navigation system may show your vehicle in the wrong place or fail to maintain GPS signal, making directions unreliable.
- Potential Causes: A malfunctioning GPS antenna or receiver, signal blockage (e.g., tall buildings, tunnels), or firmware glitches can lead to inaccurate positioning.
- Symptoms: Navigation pins the car in the wrong spot, sudden jumps of your location, or completely losing satellite connection.
- Potential Fix: Drive in open areas to re-sync signals, check for antenna issues, install software/firmware updates, or replace the GPS antenna/module as needed.
Problem #3: Outdated Maps and Incorrect Routing
- What the Problem Is: Navigation may not recognize new roads, rerouted streets, or changed addresses, leading to bad directions.
- Potential Causes: Maps become outdated over time, especially if updates aren’t installed regularly.
- Symptoms: Routes that send you the wrong way, navigation failing to locate new destinations, or confusing guidance in updated areas.
- Potential Fix: Update the map database via SD card, USB, dealer service, or NissanConnect over-the-air updates. Plan to refresh maps at least once a year.
Problem #4: Voice Guidance Problems
- What the Problem Is: The voice navigation may be too quiet, not audible, or fail to play at all even though visual directions appear correctly.
- Potential Causes: Separate voice channel volume settings, Bluetooth or CarPlay volume control issues, or software bugs interfere with audio prompts.
- Symptoms: Visual cues appear but spoken directions are missing, faint, or inconsistent.
- Potential Fix: During a direction prompt, adjust the volume knob or steering wheel controls. Update the infotainment software and check Bluetooth/CarPlay volume routing.
Problem #5: Navigation System Freezes on “Starting” or Crashes
- What the Problem Is: The navigation module may get stuck at startup, displaying “Starting” indefinitely, or crash mid-route.
- Potential Causes: Corrupted map files, software update failures, or overloaded system cache can cause startup issues.
- Symptoms: The map never loads, “Starting” message remains, or the system reboots unexpectedly.
- Potential Fix: Perform a soft reset (instructions for this can be found in the user manual), reformat USB and reinstall updates, or have the dealer reinstall firmware or replace faulty modules.

Did Nissan Release a Navigation System Recall?
As of July 2025, Nissan has not done a recall for their navigation system issues. There have been recalls over the last several years involving the infotainment system in general, though.
In September 2023, Nissan issued a recall for some 2019-2021 Nissan Altima vehicles and 2020-2021 Nissan Sentra vehicles.
Similarly, in February 2022, Nissan issued a recall for their 2020 Nissan Leaf. If you are concerned about your navigation or infotainment system, or are experiencing the problems described above, it may be wise to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Recall website, where all ongoing recalls can be searched by vehicle year, make, and model.
