backup camera recall polestar 2

Polestar Automotive USA, Inc. has issued a new safety recall for certain Polestar 2 models from the 2021 to 2025 model years.

The recall addresses a malfunction involving the backup camera, where the rearview image may fail to appear when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

The 2025 Polestar 2 Backup Camera Recall issue can significantly impair rear visibility, increasing the likelihood of an accident. An estimated 27,816 vehicles are affected.

The defect stems from a combination of software and hardware faults, including a synchronization issue between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the Infotainment Head Unit (IHU), as well as a problem with the IHU’s video input components.

Instead of showing the expected rearview feed, the screen may display a warning stating that the camera is “temporarily unavailable.”

Polestar vehicles do not have rear view windows, which makes this manufacturing defect especially dangerous for drivers.

Polestar initiated an internal investigation after receiving feedback from vehicle owners. The findings led to a voluntary safety recall to correct the defect.

This latest recall supersedes a previous campaign (24V-477), meaning that even vehicles already serviced under that earlier action will need an additional update to fully resolve the issue.

2024 Polestar 2 Backup Camera Recall

Polestar previously issue a recall for certain 2021–2024 Polestar 2 models due to a defect within the infotainment system that may affect rearview camera performance.

The 2024 Polestar 2 Backup Camera Recall issue lies in how the system handles graphical memory, which can prevent the camera feed from displaying properly—or at all—when the vehicle is in reverse.

This can compromise the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle, increasing the chance of an accident.

Initial reports of the malfunction date back to March 2021, but corrective action was delayed until regulatory pressure mounted in May 2024. Only then did Polestar begin formally reviewing customer feedback from the U.S. market.

According to the automaker, the defect is rooted in how the infotainment unit allocates its visual memory, occasionally causing the rearview image to fail when it’s most needed.

On June 25, following further technical analysis, Polestar acknowledged the safety risk and moved forward with a recall.

Owners of affected vehicles can receive a software update as part of the recall fix. While Polestar positions itself as a premium electric vehicle brand with Scandinavian design roots, its operations have been more closely aligned with its majority Chinese ownership since Volvo’s sale of its stake in May 2024.

Action Steps Polestar Owners Should Take

Check if Your Vehicle Is Involved

To determine if your Polestar 2 is affected by a backup camera recall, you can check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website or the official Polestar website.

By entering your VIN on NHTSA’s recall check site, you can find out if your vehicle is included. Polestar will also notify affected owners through mail, but it’s always a good idea to proactively check yourself.

Familiarize Yourself with the Recall Issues

The Polestar 2 backup camera recalls involve two related but distinct technical issues affecting models from 2021 through 2025.

In earlier model years, the defect stemmed from improper graphical memory allocation within the infotainment head unit, which could prevent the rearview camera from displaying a proper image—or any image at all—when the vehicle was placed in reverse.

The 2025 recall identifies a separate flaw involving a synchronization failure between the Parking Assist Camera and the infotainment system’s video input hardware.

Both issues result in the rearview image failing to appear, increasing the risk of accidents due to reduced rear visibility.

Get the Free Recall Fix

Polestar is addressing both recall-related camera issues through a complimentary software update. For many vehicles, the fix will be delivered remotely via an Over-the-Air (OTA) update.

If your Polestar 2 is already running software version P3.1.9 or later, no further action is necessary. Owners will be notified when the update becomes available, and eligible vehicles will receive it automatically.

Due to differences in the root causes—ranging from graphical memory handling problems to hardware synchronization errors—some vehicles may not be able to receive the fix remotely.

In those cases, owners can schedule a visit to an authorized Polestar service point, where the software update will be installed free of charge in accordance with the official safety recall bulletin.

Document the Recall Repair

Make sure to keep a detailed record of any recall repairs. Once the software update has been completed, whether remotely or at a service point, ensure you obtain documentation confirming the update was performed.

This documentation is valuable for your records and can be useful if you encounter any future issues or if you decide to sell the vehicle.

Ensure the Issue Is Resolved

Once the recall repair has been completed, take a moment to ensure that the rearview camera functions properly when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Given that both recalls involve defects that can limit or completely disable rear visibility, it’s critical to confirm the issue has been fully resolved.

If the camera still fails to display an image or shows error messages, reach out to Polestar customer support or visit a service center promptly for further inspection.

Seeking Legal Help

If your Polestar 2 continues to experience rearview camera issues even after receiving the recall repair, it may be time to explore your legal options.

Ongoing problems after an official fix could qualify you for additional remedies under state or federal consumer protection laws, including potential relief under the Lemon Law.

Speaking with an attorney who focuses on automotive defect cases and/or lemon law can provide clarity on your rights and whether you may be eligible for a refund, replacement, or other compensation.

Be sure to keep detailed records of all repair attempts, service visits, and communications with Polestar, as thorough documentation will be essential if you choose to move forward with a legal claim.

Lemon Law Solutions for Unresolved Polestar Problems

If your Polestar 2 has required repeated repairs for backup camera failures or other serious safety-related defects, you could be entitled to pursue a lemon law claim.

Vehicles that continue to experience unresolved issues after multiple repair attempts may qualify for compensation under these consumer protection laws.

A successful lemon law claim may lead to a vehicle repurchase, replacement, or a cash settlement—depending on the severity of the defect and your state’s specific requirements.
