Toyota has announced a recall of more than 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks from model years 2022 through 2025 because of a defect that can cause the reverse lights to fail.
The issue involves moisture intrusion into the reverse light assemblies, which can cause the lights to stop working.
This defect compromises rear visibility for drivers when backing up, especially in low-light conditions and prevents other motorists from being alerted that the vehicle is reversing—significantly increasing the risk of collisions.
Toyota will address the problem by replacing the faulty reverse light assemblies with improved versions at no cost. If corrosion has affected the wiring harness, those components will also be repaired for free.
Owners of affected trucks can expect to receive notification letters from Toyota between June 30 and July 14, 2025.

What Causes the Tundra Reverse Light Problem?
The root cause stems from a multi-layer vent patch in the reverse light assemblies. Over time, heat cycles can weaken the adhesive, allowing moisture to seep inside.
This moisture can cause corrosion of the internal circuit board or wiring inside the reverse light assembly, which interrupts the electrical connection and causes the reverse lights to flicker or stop working altogether.
In some cases, the corrosion can extend beyond the light assembly and damage the wiring harness, requiring more extensive repairs.
Reverse lights are essential for safety because they signal to other drivers and pedestrians that the vehicle is backing up and improve the driver’s rear visibility, especially in low-light conditions.
When these lights fail, it significantly increases the risk of accidents, making this manufacturing defect a serious safety issue.
Which Tundra Trucks Are Affected?
The recall applies to Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks from the 2022 through 2025 model years that feature reverse lamp assemblies with a particular adhesive used in the vent patch design.
Specifically, affected Tundras were produced between May 10, 2021, and March 26, 2025, while Tundra Hybrids were built from June 30, 2021, through March 20, 2025.
It’s important to note that not every vehicle manufactured during these periods is impacted—only those equipped with the reverse lamp assembly containing the faulty adhesive are included in the recall.
Toyota has not identified whether certain trims or packages are more prone to the issue, so the most accurate way to confirm if your truck is affected is by checking your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Owners can verify their truck’s status by entering the VIN on Toyota’s official recall website or through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall lookup tool.
Is There a Toyota Tundra Reverse Light Fix?
Yes, Toyota has developed a solution to address the reverse light problem affecting certain Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks.
The recall repair involves replacing both reverse light assemblies with redesigned units that feature an improved vent patch and stronger adhesive to prevent moisture from entering.
During the repair, technicians will carefully inspect the internal circuit boards and wiring for any signs of corrosion caused by moisture.
If corrosion has spread to the wiring harness, it will be repaired or replaced as needed—at no cost to the vehicle owner.
All repairs covered by this recall will be performed free of charge at authorized Toyota dealerships. Toyota will begin sending recall notifications to affected owners between June 30 and July 14, 2025.
If your Tundra or Tundra Hybrid is part of the recall, contact your local Toyota dealer to schedule a service appointment and have the repair completed promptly.

Legal Options for Repeat Toyota Tundra Issues
If you’re facing ongoing problems with your Toyota Tundra—such as the reverse light failure or other persistent defects—you may have legal options under state laws like the California Lemon Law.
This law is designed to protect consumers who purchase vehicles with substantial, recurring issues that impair their use, value, or safety.
For owners of affected Toyota Tundra trucks, pursuing a Lemon Law claim could potentially lead to compensation for repair costs, diminished vehicle value, or even a replacement vehicle or refund, depending on the severity and history of the issues.
It’s important to understand that every case is unique, and the outcome depends on factors such as the number of repair attempts, the nature of the defect, and the vehicle’s history.
Consulting with an experienced lemon law attorney can provide guidance tailored to your situation and help you explore your rights and potential remedies.
If your Toyota Tundra is affected by the recall involving the reverse light issue, you may be entitled to compensation for related problems, including repair costs and any damages caused by the defect.
