The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into engine stalling and power loss issues reported in specific 2022 Ram 1500 (DT) pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer (WS) SUVs.
These vehicles are powered by the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine, which is equipped with the eTorque mild-hybrid system. An estimated 150,000 vehicles may be impacted by this problem.
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 80 new complaints from consumers regarding these models. The reports describe situations where the engine suddenly shuts off, often occurring when the vehicle is moving at low speeds.
In some cases, the vehicle shifts into park and automatically engages the emergency brake.
In April 2023, Ram announced a recall for all 131,700 of its 2021 Ram 1500 trucks equipped with 5.7-liter V8 eTorque engines due to a serious issue that may cause the vehicles to stall unexpectedly while driving, potentially increasing the risk of an accident. The recall number for the 2023 eTorque recall is 23V-265.
2023 RAM eTorque Recall Overview
Ram previously recalled 131,700 1500 pickup trucks equipped with 5.7-liter V8 eTorque engines and manufactured between June 3, 2020, and Sept. 12, 2021. The recall is due to a potential problem identified in the powertrain control module (PCM) software.
Between 2020 and 2023, Ram received 636 warranty claims, 206 customer records, and 53 field reports that are potentially associated with the issue. As of February 2024, 80 additional incidents pertaining to Ram’s eTorque system have been reported to the NHTSA.
To address the issue, Ram dealerships will provide free software updates to affected truck owners to fix the problem. Ram has already identified nearly 900 reports of trucks stalling while driving, including one crash without injuries.
If you own a 1500 pickup truck with a 5.7 hemi eTorque engine manufactured between June 3, 2020, and September 12, 2021, make sure to check if your vehicle is affected by the recall and take it to your local Ram dealership for the free software update.
Ram will reach out to both dealers and drivers starting June 2, 2023.
What is the root cause of 2022 Ram eTorque problems?
Ram has identified a potential issue in its 2021 Ram 1500 pickup trucks equipped with 5.7-liter V8 eTorque mild hybrid engines. The problem lies in the powertrain control module (PCM) software, which may cause the engine to shut down completely due to an incorrect air-fuel mixture that is too rich. This stalling issue can pose a significant risk of crashes if it happens while the vehicle is in motion.
Which makes and models experience the eTorque problems?
In 2023, Ram announced the recall of its 2020 and 2021 model year 1500 pickup trucks due to eTorque issues. The Jeep Wagoneer was previously recalled due to engine stalling issues in July 2024 prior to the launch of the NHTSA’s investigation into the eTorque issues. Please note that other Ram and Jeep vehicles may also be affected.
If you have recently purchased a Ram 1500 pickup or a newer Jeep Wagoneer, you should remain vigilant and monitor your vehicle for any signs of problems.
If you notice any irregularities with your Ram vehicle, such as stalling or sudden loss of power, we highly recommend taking it to a qualified mechanic for inspection and repair.
In some cases, the issues may persist despite repair attempts, leading to frustration and potential financial losses. If you find yourself in this situation, it may be worthwhile to seek the advice of a legal professional who specializes in lemon law claims.
An experienced lemon law attorney can help you determine the best course of action to protect your rights and interests if you suspect that you have purchased or leased a lemon.
Remember, as a consumer, you have the right to a safe and reliable vehicle. If you suspect that a vehicle you have purchased or leased may be defective, be sure to act, as your rights may have been compromised.
How do I know if my Ram or Jeep hemi eTorque engine is defective?
Here is a list of the reported symptoms associated with eTorque problems in RAM and Jeep vehicles between 2019 and 2022:
- Abrupt engine shut-off
- Automatic emergency brake activation
- Sudden system failure
- Dependence on turning off AC or ventilated seats
- Incorrect battery voltage readings
- Low voltage conditions
- Faulty oil pump
- Cooling system malfunctions
- Rocker arm problems
- Cylinder head failures
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms in your RAM 1500 or Jeep Wagoneer vehicle, you should present your vehicle for warranty repairs to an authorized dealer. Ignoring these warning signs can not only cause further damage to your vehicle but also pose a significant risk of accidents and injuries.
Can I file a lemon law claim?
If you’ve been struggling with repeat issues related to the Jeep or Ram eTorque problems, even after multiple repairs under warranty, you may be eligible for a lemon law claim.
The Lemon Laws exist to protect consumers who have purchased or leased new or used defective vehicles. The lemon laws vary by state.
To qualify under the California Lemon Law, the vehicle generally must have a defect that affects its use, value, or safety, and the problem has not been resolved after a reasonable number of repair attempts.
Navigating the lemon law claims process can be daunting, and it often involves extensive paperwork and legal analysis and procedures. That is why we recommend working with an experienced lemon law attorney who can evaluate your case, determine your eligibility, and guide you through the claims process.
At the Lemon Law Experts, we specialize in the California Lemon Law and we have successfully helped thousands of consumers across the State of California get the compensation they deserve for their defective vehicles.
What are the Potential California Lemon Law Remedies?
Under the California Lemon Law, qualifying claims are eligible for a refund, replacement vehicle, or cash compensation. A refund consists of the reimbursement of all monies spent on the lemon including the down payment, monthly payments (minus a usage fee which is a value assigned for when the vehicle was trouble-free), the reimbursement of all incidental expenses related to the lemon, and the payoff of any outstanding loan or lease payments.
A replacement consists of doing a collateral exchange for a vehicle that is substantially similar to the one that is a lemon.
A cash and keep consists of retaining possession of the vehicle and receiving cash for the issues you experienced with it.
As a prevailing party, the California Lemon Law mandates that the auto manufacturer pay for the consumer’s attorney fees and costs. This makes pursuing a California Lemon Law claim a right and easy decision. With our firm, we only get paid if we win your case and you will not come out of pocket for our representation.
