Honda Motor Co. has expanded its airbag recall to approximately 1.6 million vehicles. The recall is for faulty airbag inflators in specific Honda and Acura vehicles. The recall has been announced because of the airbag inflators that can inadvertently deploy with too much pressure thereby causing the inflator to rupture.
The recall affects older-model Honda and Acura vehicles; specifically, model years 2001 and 2002 Honda Civic and Honda Accord sedans, 2002 Honda Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 Honda CR-Vs, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2TL and the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles.
Honda announced that the recent expansion of this recall, including an additional 833,000 vehicles, is to ensure that 2,430 recalled airbag inflator service parts are replaced. This recent expansion to the recall covers vehicles that did not come from the factory with faulty parts. Rather, this recent expansion covers vehicles that potentially received faulty parts that were installed from vehicles that were involved in a collision.
Honda announced that it cannot determine which vehicles received the faulty parts. As a result, Honda is recalling all 833,000 vehicles to determine if they contain the dangerous parts.
